Inmarsat announced the launch of a new service for Maritime Safety Information Providers, marking a key stage in upgrading the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System, which helps to save thousands of lives at sea each year.

IOActive, Inc. released a new advisory documenting critical cybersecurity vulnerabilities affecting Stratos Global's AmosConnect communication shipboard platform, which is used by thousands of ships globally. Responding to this claim, Inmarsat, mother company of Stratos Global, confirmed that AC8 is no longer in service,  noting that its central server no longer accepts connections from AmosConnect 8 email clients, therefore the software is not applicable.

The new office opened on 2nd October in Piraeus and is expected to offer technical advice on owners seeking communications, navigation and other technical solutions for their vessels.

Inmarsat and Rolls-Royce have signed a Letter of Intent to have the option to make the Rolls-Royce Energy Management system available via Inmarsat Maritime’s Fleet Xpress broadband service, to reduce energy consumption and support environmental compliance.

On the sidelines of London International Shipping Week, Inmarsat showcased its new Fleet Secure service, the industry’s first fully-managed service to detect vulnerabilities, respond to threats and protect ships from cyber attacks. 

Inmarsat announced that Mitsubishi Heavy Industries has been selected as the launch provider for the first satellite in the Inmarsat-6 fleet. The satellite, currently under construction by Airbus Defence and Space, is scheduled for launch in 2020 using MHI’s H-IIA launch vehicle.

Inmarsat announced the signing of a MoU with Samsung Heavy Industries, aiming to leverage the ‘smart ship’ connectivity offered by Fleet Xpress at the vessel construction stage. The ‘Smart Ship’ service aims to allow owners to harvest data from hull-monitors and equipment sensors onboard in real-time.
