The Assembly of the International Maritime Organization has elected the Members of its Council for the 2024-2025 biennium.

IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim has opened the 33rd session of the IMO Assembly (A 33), which is meeting at IMO Headquarters in London from 27 November – 6 December 2023.   

The IMO Assembly will meet for its 33rd session from 27 November – 6 December 2023 and will be preceded by the IMO Council 130th session, 21-24 November 2023.  

IMO announced the states elected during its 30th Assembly to be Members of its Council for the 2018-2019 biennium. The Council is the executive organ of IMO and is responsible, under the Assembly, for supervising the work of the Organization.

The Strait of Hormuz in southern Iran is the world's most secure region for shipping, according to Iran's representative to IMO. These remarks were made by Mr. Mohammad Rastad on Tuesday, on the sidelines of IMO's 30th Assembly session, at IMO headquarters in London.

Speaking at the opening of IMO's 30th Assembly session, IMO Secretary-General Mr. Kitack Lim highlighted his ambition to transform IMO into a “knowledge based Organization”. Considering digital disruption will arrive in the shipping world very soon, IMO must be ready, Mr Lim highlighted.

The IMO Assembly has called on Member States to accept the 2012 Cape Town fishing vessel safety agreement, to address the high casualty rate in the sector.

The IMO Assembly held its 29th session from Monday 23 November through Wednesday 2 December 2015 under the Presidency of His Excellency Mr D. Federico Trillo-Figueroa of SPAIN.

The IMO has concluded its Assembly meeting in London, which is held every second year. A number of important items were on the agenda, including the IMO work programme and budget for the 2016-17 biennium as well as the Organization's work on safety and the environment since the recent Assembly meeting. More or less all 171 member States and a number of interest organisations participated in the Assembly meeting.
