Finnish research firm VTT announced it developed a technology that solves challenges of emission-free hydrogen technology, combining devices that produce hydrogen from water and electricity from hydrogen into a single movable system that produces hydrogen with an efficiency as high as 80–90%.

Seven major companies of the energy and maritime sector, signed an agreement in order to develop new projects that can offer to the the production, transport and storage of hydrogen. Through the agreement, companies assist in Belgium's climate target to reduce CO2 emissions by 80% until 2050.

Although hydrogen has a leading role in the field of energy transition, its development proceeds with a low speed. This current situation motivated the Port of Rotterdam and a broad coalition from Greenpeace, to call the government to enhance hydrogen investments.

Havyard is working towards a hydrogen system pilot for large ships, as it is entering the approval phase and has signed agreements with providers of hydrogen tanks and fuel cells. Namely, the Havyard Group, with Havyard Design & Solutions and Norwegian Electric Systems, is now developing a system that will become the biggest of its kind for ships.

On behalf of German ship operator Reederei Nord, a team from ETH Zurich investigated shipping activities in the North and Baltic Seas as well as the infrastructure, costs of new fuels and storage options, in a bid to map out “routes” towards emission-​free shipping.

The first offshore green hydrogen plant created by the Neptune Energy , located in the Dutch field of the North Sea, includes three energy systems in one platform; offshore wind, offshore gas, and hydrogen. Ammonia and hydrogen are promising potential fuels of the future in a decarbonized shipping industry, which has to switch to alternative, zero carbon fuels to meet the targets of the initial IMO strategy on reduction of GHG emissions from ships, an IMO symposium on sulphur 2020 and alternative fuels heard on 18 October.

Cryo Shipping, Bergen-based bunker supplier, will develop infrastructure solutions to be able to supply fully renewable energy as a marine fuel, provided with a government's grant. The company is collaborating with major stakeholders in the hydrogen sector, initially serving Norwegian shipowners who are taking early positions as consumers of fully renewable marine fuels.

Engineers from MAN, Braemar Technical Services along with additional four maritime companies are developing a zero-emissions superyacht, which will consist of an all-of-the-above selection of green technology. The team behind this, look towards a zero emissions upon weight savings. 

DNV GL and Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (KSOE) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU), aiming to cooperate on the development of low and zero carbon ship technology. The project will include additional study on LNG as a ship fuel, as well as an assessment on its potential as a transitional step to zero-carbon options.
