A cement carrier ran aground on the west coast of Iceland on Saturday, November 3 because of the heavy waves and weather conditions. The crew and the pilot controlling the carrier were rescued by a helicopter. The grounding of the ship had as a result the breach of the carrier's hull and an oil spill.

UK MAIB informs of a fatality on board a fishing vessel. Namely, a crew man lost his life when he fell in between two vessels. Before the fatality, the crewmembers of the fishing boat were drinking in a bar close to the harbour. Poor weather and the level of alcohol in his system is likely to have adversely affected his risk perception.

Category 5 Super Typhoon Yutu has now pushed west of the islands of Saipan and Tinian in the US Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. Yutu may eventually arrive in the Philippines, Taiwan or southern Japan next week, according to the US National Weather Service. 

Just after 8am on Sunday 21 October, the UK's HM Coastguard received report that a ferry, with 56 persons onboard, collided with at least two yachts whilst trying to berth at the entrance of Cowes Harbour, amid heavy fog. The 'Red Falcon' ferry remained grounded at the entrance at Cowes. 

Maritime NZ is reminding boaties heading out on the water this Labour Weekend that checking the marine weather forecast could save their lives. 58% percent of Kiwi boaties said they check the marine forecast ‘every time’ prior to heading out, according to Ipsos research released earlier this week.

The Greek-flagged Ro-Ro cargo ship 'Capetan Christos' was sailing in the port of Piraeus coming from the island of Paros and heading to Elefsina, when she hit the Portuguese-flagged container ship "Stadt Dresden", which was anchored. The winds were 7 Beaufort strong at that time.

Accidents involving ships at anchor usually occur when the anchor drags and the vessel drifts without holding power, leading to collisions, groundings or strandings. In a recent Loss prevention guide, the Japan P&I Club shared key countermeasures for preventing an anchor dragging in stormy weather.

Two crew members suffering injuries were evacuated after a fall onboard the 177-meter bulk carrier 'Bona', on the evening hours of 28 August. The two men were seriously injured after a wave washed over the vessel in heavy seas causing them to be washed up against machinery onboard the vessel.

All 12 crewmembers of the stranded container ship 'Jin Hua' were safely rescued, Taiwan's Maritime and Port Bureau informed. The authorities are now examining a plan to salvage the vessel when the weather conditions allow it. The ship's condition has now gotten worse and there are concerns that oil may leak.

Seven ships grounded off Kaohsiung Port in Taiwan due to heavy winds and waves, which were caused by a storm that hit Taiwan. All 88 crew of the seven ships that were stranded are reported safe, Taiwan’s Maritime and Port Bureau informed. Local authorities are waiting for weather conditions to improve to start response operations.
