Ten people died on Norwegian commercial vessels during 2018

The Norwegian Maritime Authority informed that despite a slight decrease in the number of accidents in 2018, there was an increase in the number of fatalities. Specifically, ten people died in 2018, in comparison to seven in 2017. Seven of the fatalities in 2018 took place on fishing vessels. About half (53%) of fatal accidents over the last five years, are attributed to personal accidents.

Cargo vessel runs aground off Sweden

A cargo vessel was damaged after grounding in the Bråviken bay, off Sweden, the Swedish Maritime Administration reported. The vessel named 'Listervik' allied with rocky bottom west of Oxelösund. After the grounding, the vessel was escorted by the Swedish Coast Guard ships to the Port of Oxelosund where it moored in the morning hours of February 8.

Absence of detailed pilotage plan leads to cargo vessel grounding

UK MAIB published its report on the grounding of the general cargo vessel Celtica Hav. The vessel grounded on 27 March 2018 on a stone training wall in the approach channel to the River Neath, Wales. Celtica Hav was quickly re-floated and manoeuvred clear of the training wall. It sustained shell plate damage to the bottom of its hull, causing water ingress to some ballast tanks and flooding in the engine room.

Tanker grounded in Elbe river

The product tanker Oriental Nadeshiko grounded on 21 January in the Elba estuary, off Cuxhaven, Germany. The ship was not damaged, while no oil leak was reported as result of the grounding. The ship was going to Tarragona, Spain, from Stade, Germany. Salvage teams attempted to make the ship lighter by removing some of its ballast water. Moreover, four tugs went on the scene to help refloat the tanker.
