The company’s latest great achievement is the ERMA FIRST BWTS FIT, a ballast water treatment system suitable in fresh water operations. The system has received type approval from the Greek Administration for operation at fresh water conditions (0.9 psu), class approval from Lloyd’s Register and AMS from USCG. ERMA FIRST FIT is amongst the very few systems in AMS list, which has been approved for fresh water operations. Ten Myths about Ballast Water Treatment

Leif Eric Caspersen, International Sales Director, ERMA First presentation during the 2015 GREEN4SEA Forum Our experience and knowledge on the ten myths about Ballast Water Treatment are as follows: Ship owners organizations will force IMO to postpone the ratification of the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships' Ballast Water and Sediments (BWM). This myth was debunked, as it was clarified that this is not going to happen. «With all the ballast water being carried around the world, it is too late to protect the environment». This was the second myth that Erma First’s International Sales Manager debunked, stressing out that every nine weeks invasive species introduce successfully in the marine environment causing even greater damage than an oil spill, situation that is not going to change unless we apply efficient measures. Port Authorities will not fine ship owners that will miss the deadlines for Ballast Water Treatment System (BWTS) installment. It was refuted that port authorities will not impose fines, as there are no indications that this is a potential scenario when relevant regulation comes into force. There will be not enough suppliers of Ballast Water Treatment Systems. It was clearly noted, more than 50 makers of Ballast Water ...

Challenges in the Selections and Installation of BWTS

There are many critical elements in relation to the design, selection and installation of BWTS. The process is a quadric-modal one which starts with the selection and the design study, followed by detailed study and installation. However, we will confront a lot of challenges in the process. What is critical is what lies below the iceberg. Had the Convention been validated tomorrow, we would need to do 40-50 retrofits every day until the end of 2017. Having that number in mind, it seems that we should not over emphasize the selection process. Unfortunately, we don't have feedback from BWTS already installed. We are dealing with a case of public pressure putting the regulations ahead of technology. We can apply advanced selection techniques like fuzzy- logic or multi-criteria decision analysis, or simpler statistical grading of  questions which can be grouped  related to technical, health and safety , financial, operation, installation and maintenance considerations. The one million question is '' are we going to have the time to go through this grading and selection process?'' The installation questions we have is where to place the system, how to integrate it with  the remaining machinery and what to do. We have to forget ...
