VesselsValue issued its 2019 list of the top 10 shipowning nations, revealing a $17.6bn increase in the top 10 global fleet values. Greece tops the list with an increase of its total value by over USD 5 billion in one year. This is the second biggest increase in value for any of the top 10 shipping nations. 

According to new data released by the NGO Shipbreaking Platform, on January 30, 744 large ocean-going commercial vessels were sold to the scrap yards in 2018. 518 out of these vessels, were broken down on tidal mudflats in Bangladesh, India and Pakistan, amounting to a record-breaking 90,4% of the gross tonnage dismantled globally.

Port of Piraeus is for the time being the second largest port in the Mediterranean Sea. After COSCO's enter in the port, its annual throughput capacity was increased from 0.68 million TEUs to 4.15 million in 2017. Mainly, the growth, the port of Piraeus has experienced in recent years, is the result of the cooperation between Greece and China, based on the Belt and Road initiative.

Gastrade announced that the Alexandroupolis FSRU delivery timeline is extended by 6 months. Gastrade expects to launch the execution phase tender within the first quarter of 2019. The FSRU will be located in the sea of Thrace, 17.6 km SW of the town of Alexandroupolis.

Greece hauls the remains of cargo ships through the water, listing to one side with a rusting hull exposed  in and near the Gulf of Elefsina, an industrial area of shipyards and factories near Greece's major port of Piraeus. Now Greek authorities have begun to remove the ships, some of which have been there for decades, saying they are both an environmental hazard and a danger to modern shipping.

The first phase of the Market Test for the reservation of regasification capacity at the floating LNG Terminal in Alexandroupolis, being developed by the Greek Gastrade, was completed with success on 31 December 2018. Twenty companies submitted Expression of Interest.

Ro-pax 'Fior Di Levante' has plugged into the first shore power facility in the eastern Mediterranean at Killini port in an inauguration ceremony on December 20, 2018. The cold ironing facility was developed within a European co-funded programme to allow the port of Killini in Greece to limit air pollution, while paving the way for other Greek ports to become emissions-free hubs in the eastern Mediterranean region.

The Greek Coast Guard confiscated six tons of cannabis and about three million “Captagon” amphetamine pills, inside a Syrian freighter, in the Port of Heraklion, Crete. The ship was heading to Libya and was intercepted by off Crete on December 5.

Greece's Port of Killini, at the west side of the country towards the Ionian Sea, is to see the first shore-to-ship (STS) electrical supply connection in Eastern Mediterranean. The Ro-pax ferry 'Fior Di Levante' will plug into the region's first shore power facility , in a special inauguration ceremony on Thursday, 20th December.

Greek businessmen and Chinese scholars expressed their optimism regarding the cooperation between the two countries as far as the Belt and Road Initiative is concerned, during a forum on December 10 at Piraeus port. This initiative is considered as an attempt by China to reshape the map of global trade and political influence.
