The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is the latest state to endorse the IMO instrument providing rules for the prevention of air pollution from ships and energy efficiency requirements. The overall number of ratifications of MARPOL Annex VI is 93, and reflects the 96.6% of the global merchant shipping tonnage.

IBIA announced that it will be present at the 6th session of the IMO’s Sub-Committee on Pollution Prevention and Response (PPR 6), which will endeavour to complete work on remaining issues relating to consistent implementation of the 0.50% sulphur limit set to take effect from 1 January 2020.

SEA EUROPE stated that with 90% of international trade, 80% of the EU’s external trade and 40% of the EU’s internal trade carried by water, shipping is vital for trade. In the meantime, shipping accounts for the 3.1% of CO2 emissions. Should no actions to be taken, shipping emissions could exceed the 250% by 2050. 

IMO Secretary-General, Kitack Lim, called all Member States and overall the maritime industry, including shipping and ports, to follow IMO's ambitious attempts on reducing GHG shipping emissions from global shipping.

IMO’s Sub-Committee on Pollution Prevention and Response meets this week, from 18 to 22 February at IMO headquarters. The meeting will focus on finalizing draft Guidelines on the implementation of the 0.50% sulphur limit under MARPOL Annex VI. The Guidelines aim to help the preparations for uniform implementation of the lower limit for sulphur content in ships' fuel oil.

As the 2020 deadline for the sulphur cap gets nearer, ICS reviewed progress in persuading the IMO to take measures to address expected implementation problems. This includes safety and fuel compatibility issues regarding the use of new 0.5% sulphur blends and continuing uncertainty over the availability of compliant fuels in every port globally.  

BHP, NYK, GoodFuels and BLOC, announced the successful delivery of biofuels to the NYK-owned bulk carrier Frontier Sky, with CO2 savings verified with BLOC’s blockchain fuels assurance platform. The biofuel, supplied by GoodFuels, is a ‘drop-in’ marine gasoil-equivalent, and was blended with conventional fossil-based MGO in a mix of 30% biofuel to 70% conventional MGO.

'Just-In-Time' operations (JIT) contribute to cutting emissions, by limiting the time vessels passively spend outside ports. Although JIT is helpful to the environment and helps reduce costs, there are multiple operational and contractual barriers to overcome before this could be implemented globally. IMO’s GIA, focusing on the vessels that can already implement JIT, gathered with a variety of industry stakeholders to discuss with what means they can accomplish JIT globally. 

London-based oil major BP announced it will support a call from investor participants of the Climate Action 100+ initiative, for the company to broaden its corporate reporting to describe how its strategy is consistent with the goals of the Paris Agreement. Investors proposed a resolution to be put to shareholders at the company’s annual general meeting in May 2019.
