The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is the latest state to endorse the IMO instrument providing rules for the prevention of air pollution from ships and energy efficiency requirements. The overall number of ratifications of MARPOL Annex VI is 93, and reflects the 96.6% of the global merchant shipping tonnage.
Mainly, MARPOL Annex VI mitigates the vessels’ air pollution that is containes in their exhaust gas, including sulphur oxides and nitrous oxides.
In the meantime, it bans the deliberate emissions of ozone depleting substances.
MARPOL Annex VI also provides energy-efficiency measures that aspire to decrease GHG emissions from shipping.
Except the UAE, Monaco, Iceland, Guatemala, the Philippines and others have acceded the IMO’s rules on preventing air pollution from the shipping industry and aiming for further energy-efficiency requirements.
Ms. Rawdha Al Otaiba, Deputy Head of Mission of the UAE to the United Kingdom, met IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim at IMO Headquarters, London to deposit instrument of accession.
