Norwegian expedition cruise operator Hurtigruten and Rolls-Royce signed a Letter of Intent for an environmental upgrade programme to hybrid power. Namely, the main engines on up to nine cruise ships will switch from diesel to gas power, and will also have a hybrid battery system. Six existing passenger cruise vessels will be equipped, with an option for a further three.

The new gas turbine arrived at the Port of King’s Lynn onboard the general cargo vessel MV Eastern Vanquish. Because the port is close to the power station, the port will enable a natural flow of goods from incoming vessels to their ultimate destination, reducing the distance travelled by cargo and reducing transport costs.

This was partly because of the increasing LNG demand in China, which has started shifting millions of homes and businesses from coal to gas fired heating. Growth in 2018 is expected to continue, with global LNG exports increasing by the fastest rate since the launch of Qatar’s mega trains back in 2010.

Half of the offshore section for the TurkStream Offshore Gas Pipeline has been installed. Namely, over 930 kilometer of pipeline has been laid in total on the seabed of the Black Sea, divided over two strings. Pioneering Spirit, the vessel conducting deep-water sections of the pipeline, passed kilometer point 706 for the first line.

DryShips announced that its wholly owned subsidiary, Gas Ships Limited has filed a registration statement on Form F-1 with the US Securities & Exchange Commission, regarding the spin off of its gas carrier business from Dryships. DryShips can decide to abandon, modify or change the terms of the spin-off, at any time until its completion.

The contract is of total $213.3 million worth. According to the deal, three liquefied gas tankers will be constructed, with KOTC paying $71 million for each ship. The first of the three tankers will have been built until the end of 2019, increasing the number of the company's gas tankers to 31.

Yamal LNG is planned to ship its first two cargoes of Liquefied Natural Gas from the Russian port of Sabetta in November. However, Novatek and Total, the project's main developers, have not yet confirmed the destinations of the shipments.

Singapore-based Sembcorp Marine and Houston-based SeaOne Caribbean have inked a letter of intent for the design and construction of at least two large Compressed Gas Liquid carriers. These vessels will be deployed for SeaOne’s Caribbean Fuels Supply Project.

The Regional Maritime University in Ghana signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Höegh LNG, for the support and maritime capacity development for both RMU and Ghanaian seafarers. The MoU aims to build Ghanaian ability to efficiently operate and handle advanced gas carriers.

China Merchants Industry Holding and DNV GL signed a strategic cooperation agreement during Nor-Shipping last week focusing on advancing shipbuilding in the gas carrier, offshore and special vessel segments. The two companies will work together to optimize construction processes and quality control, in order to develop vessels that meet the varying requirements of these markets.
