Inert gas systems are installed on liquefied gas carriers to meet operational demands like gas freeing, before gassing up, and in some cases, between the switch of cargoes. When performing the examination of the IGS, examiners need to verify the following three items: operational O2 content meter; operational alarm for when oxygen levels exceed 5%; means to prevent backflow of gas.

According to the American Petroleum Institute’s latest monthly statistical report, the US achieved a record for the production of natural gas liquids during July, as the US produced 4.4 million barrels per day. July also saw the US tie its record for crude oil production at 10.7 mb/d.

New attempts to create multi-billion dollar LNG plants are increasing following a long pause in investments. Global demand for LNG increased by 12% in 2017, surpassing the forecasts, and is expected to further grow by up to 10% in 2018.

Eni has started gas production from the Sankofa field in the Offshore Cape Three Points Integrated Oil and Gas Project, in Ghana. The field will provide 180 million standard cubic feet per day for at least 15 years. This amount is enough to convert to gas half of Ghana's power generation capacity.

In its Energy Trends report for Q1 2018, the UK Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy reveals a record high for gas imports in the first quarter of 2018, but a decrease in LNG imports by 14% which and now account for only 9% of total imports.

Oil major BP and its partners announced the start-up of the landmark Shah Deniz 2 gas development in Azerbaijan, including its first commercial gas delivery to Turkey. The $28 billion project is the first subsea development in the Caspian Sea and the largest subsea infrastructure operated by the company worldwide.

Russian Sovcomflot and Novatek signed an agreement on transport support for the Yamal LNG, Arctic LNG-2 projects and other Arctic projects of Novatek. The agreement regards the transportation of hydrocarbons such as LNG and gas condensate from Yamal LNG and Arctic LNG-2 project.

According to the IEA’s latest market forecast, strong demand growth from China, greater industrial demand, and rising supplies from the US, will transform global natural gas markets over the next five years. Namely, global gas demand will increase at an average rate of 1.6% a year, reaching over 4,100 billion cubic meters in 2023.

Nearly two-thirds (64%) of oil and gas sector leaders expect to increase or sustain spending on gas projects in 2018, as the sector prepares for gas to overtake oil as the world’s primary energy source in the mid-2030s, according to a survey by DNV GL, which reveals a growing confidence in the case for gas.

ClassNK issued its Guidelines for Liquefied Gas Carrier Structures – Independent Prismatic Tanks. The Guidelines include technical requirements regarding the structural strength assessments of liquefied gas carriers by using direct calculation. The Guidelines are consisted by the Guidelines for Direct Strength Analysis, and the Guidelines for Fatigue Strength Assessment .
