Providing renewable electricity to ships while they are at berth in UK ports has the potential to reduce the equivalent of 1.2 million diesel cars worth of nitrogen oxides pollution and bring £402 million per year of health and environmental benefits. The study found that ships’ auxiliary engines at berth are equivalent to the emissions equivalent to 84,000 to 166,000 buses and coaches.

The Port of San Diego has started a unique project, as it will recycle a type of waste that is often left behind as litter - cigarette butts. This project aims to reduce the amount of discarded cigarette butts on Port tidelands, and it will help recycle the waste into useful products. The Port installed 31 cigarette butt receptacles along its facilities.

KfW IPEX-Bank became the first German bank to join the initiative "Responsible Ship Recycling Standards". This initiative aims to include scrapping clauses in accordance with international standards into loan agreements, and wants shipping companies to provide at least the minimum standards of occupational safety and environmental protection when scrapping their ships

The International Transport Forum released a report, reviewing port-based incentive schemes to reduce shipping emissions, such as environmentally differentiated port fees. The report wants to determine how the financial incentives at the port level could provide important lessons for the design of decarbonisation policies for the maritime sector.

NYK will issue green bonds, especially the Unsecured Corporate Bonds No.40, in a public offering in the Japanese market in May this year. NYK becomes the first company that publishes green bonds in the international shipping industry. In a green bond the proceeds are used for funding environment-friendly projects.

The City Council of Amsterdam officially approved the ‘Westpoort Noise Dispersion Plan’, on 14 March 2018, dividing the available noise zones in the Westpoort section of the Port among the plots of land located in the area. The plan discloses exactly how much noise zones are allocated to the plots located on the industrial site.
