Norwegian ferry operator Boreal Sjø and Wärtsilä Ship Design have entered into a cooperation agreement to develop a hydrogen-powered ferry to the Hjelmeland-Skipavik-Nesvik route in Norway. The ferry will be the world's first in this size to use hydrogen as a fuel.

Energy company PBES, announced that it has installed two 1MWh battery systems onboard the new electric ferries sailing the E39 highway route on the 2km crossing between the Anda and Lote docks. The M/F Gloppefjord and Eidsfjord are Norway’s latest battery-operated ferries.

The vessels will be the largest fully electric Ro-Ro vessels in the Netherlands, and will operate fully on electricity, providing an emission-free urban transport solution. The new vessels will replace existing ferries that operate on three different routes west of Amsterdam.

Norwegian Control Systems will deliver five automation systems including their Concept Bridge solution, with a large electro engineering package for Fjord1`s new ferries. Norwegian Control Systems will deliver automation systems to nine Fjord1 ferries in total.

The electrical passenger ferry, operates between the island of Cijian and the port of Kaohsiung in Taiwat, which entered service last year, is fully electrically powered, follows the introduction of a hybrid ferry earlier in 2017. 

Port-Liner is currently building the ‘Tesla ships; one more addition to the ongoing fuel transformation. The two giant all-electric barges will be ready by this autumn and will be inaugurated by sailing the Wilhelmina canal in the Netherlands.

The Environmental Protection Administration in Taiwan, instructed Taiwanese port authorities to reduce pollution as much as possible, after a severe air pollution was noticed in the country. Furthermore, Taiwan’s Executive Yuan announced an action plan to cut air pollution and foster renewable energy. 

Norwegian Vard secured a contract for the construction of an electric car and passenger ferry for compatriot Boreal. The new ferry will feature a fully electrical battery for continuous electric operations, and is specially designed for environmentally friendly operations in the Norwegian fjords.

The study selected cruise ships, as the cruise industry has been proactive at addressing environmental issues over the past decade and these vessels are more frequently fitted with the on-board infrastructure required. This, along with high individual electricity demand while at berth is expected to increase utilisation.
