The Port of Long Beach will build a $7.1 million 'microgrid' to show the present new technology’s effectiveness in providing a clean, reliable supply of electricity for critical operations at the US's second-busiest seaport. The Port will establish a solar carport, power storage systems and advanced controls.

As the world is changing, technologies that were the absolute norm, are now becoming old-fashioned. Up until now, ships have been sailing using fuels. However, it seems that electric vessels are gaining momentum, with many countries considering them as the future.

In an exclusive interview with SAFETY4SEA during SMM 2018, Mr. Eirik Nyhus, Director, Environment, International Regulatory Affairs, DNV GL notes that electrification is going to be a key element to move forward the sustainability space. Definitely decarbonization is the number one challenge for the industry, Mr. Nyhus comments, citing three key elements to accelerate pace. He concludes that climate change is the key driver for more action, meaning that policy makers ‘have to actually start today’ and not wait till 2023!

Marking a landmark for shipping electrification, the all electric passenger vessel 'Future of The Fjords', owned by Norwegian company The Fjords, has won the Ship of the Year 2018 award at SMM, the maritime trade fair currently underway in Hamburg. 

The world's first autonomous and electric container vessel is one step closer to launch, as YARA signed a deal with VARD worth NOK 250 million to build the vessel. VARD will deliver Yara Birkeland for launch in early 2020, and the vessel will gradually move from manned operation to fully autonomous by 2022.

Denmark's E-ferry 'Ellen' will delay another three months. The ferry will start service in the first quarter of 2019, sailing on the Søby - Fynshav route. Despitethe building works of the e-ferry have almost completed, the ferry still does not have its battery packs, as the delivery and instillation of 840 modules is still developing.

The multinational public transport company Arriva Danmark has recently contracted Damen Shipyards Group for five fully-electric ferries, to be operated for the Danish public transport agency MOVIA, in the country’s capital city Copenhagen, as the city strives to meet its target of zero emissions in public transport in the years to come.

The first electric cruise ship in Yangtze river will start operations during 2018, China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation informed. This ship will be an attempt by China to replace oil fueled vessels with electric ones. CSIC will also set up charging points along the river. It will be powered by lithium batteries.

The all-electric catamaran "Future of the Fjords" has been delivered from Brødrene Aa to the owner and operator The Fjords. Future of the Fjords will make around 700 yearly round trips along the UNESCO World Heritage listed fjord route between Flåm and Gudvangen. The boat will be powered by two electric engines.

Up until now, ships have been sailing using fuels. These may have been diesel, or even LNG, which is increasing. However, there is a new trend in ships’ propulsion. That is no other than electricity.
