The Fjords decided to push back the delivery of the all-electric catamaran, Legacy of The Fjords, to May 2020. The decision was made because of problems regarding the necessary battery-loading infrastructure in the Oslo harbour area. The decision to launch the ship on 2020 also aims to leverage the optimal value from a full high-season of operations.

At the start of 2019, Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG and its partners started research and development work on the publicly funded FRESH project at its Container Terminal Altenwerder. FRESH stands for flexibility management and control reserve provision of heavy goods vehicles in the harbour. The aim of the research is to incorporate the battery capacities of the automated guided container transport vehicles (AGVs) that are in use at CTA into the German energy network as flexible storage units that contribute to the grid stability of the power supply.

Ice, a marine design company, in light of a customer's demand, recently developed a design for an all-electric ferry that will be able to carry 200 passengers and 45 cars. The electric ferry is another example of the company to serve technology demands in the maritime sector.

A Volvo Penta powered electric ferry service is being introduced into Gothenburg's ElectriCity transport ecosystem.The new electric-powered ferry will link both sides of the Göta River. Volvo Penta will be the first fully-electric ferry in the city able to complete longer, multi-stop routes along the river, and incorporate quick charging capabilities.

Asahi Tanker and partner Exeno-Yamamizu Corporation Tokyo have developed the new domestic shipping tanker design which incorporates zero emission electric propulsion. The commercial model development of the 'e5' design is currently ongoing for all bunker supply vessels that are trading in Tokyo Bay. The target of the first vessel launching is planned for the fourth quarter of 2020.

The Port of Hamburg announced that its first two straddle carriers with environmentally friendly hybrid engines are now transporting containers between the ship, the yard, the rail terminal and the truck gate at the HHLA Container Terminal Tollerort (CTT). The two prototypes are expected to use at least 15% less diesel than their predecessors.

The Danish Maritime authority is responsible on making sure that safety is part of the innovative efforts taking place in the Blue Denmark, as electric ferries are developing in an unprecedented rate. Consequently, DMA is cooperating with the industry and other authorities and classification societies to highlight the use of lithium-ion batteries in the shipping sector, mostly focusing on safety.

Sailcargo announced that construction has officially begun for Ceiba, a 148-foot emission-free cargo tall vessel, that will feature a 100% electric engine, solar batteries, panels and wind turbines, to make all auxiliary power 100% renewably sourced. 

Norwegian ferry company Norled announced it has won a contract for the development, construction and operation of the world's first hydrogen-electric ferry, where at least 50% of the energy requirement is covered by hydrogen. Today, there are no comparable hydrogen powered vessels in operation.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced that the first all-electric straddle carrier in the US is coming to the Port of New York and New Jersey by the end of this year. This is part of initiatives to meet goals for greenhouse gas emissions reductions set forth in the Paris Climate Agreement.
