Container transporters explore batteries to be connected to the German power grid

At the start of 2019, Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG and its partners started research and development work on the publicly funded FRESH project at its Container Terminal Altenwerder. FRESH stands for flexibility management and control reserve provision of heavy goods vehicles in the harbour. The aim of the research is to incorporate the battery capacities of the automated guided container transport vehicles (AGVs) that are in use at CTA into the German energy network as flexible storage units that contribute to the grid stability of the power supply.

New design revealed for world’s first pure-electric tanker

Asahi Tanker and partner Exeno-Yamamizu Corporation Tokyo have developed the new domestic shipping tanker design which incorporates zero emission electric propulsion. The commercial model development of the 'e5' design is currently ongoing for all bunker supply vessels that are trading in Tokyo Bay. The target of the first vessel launching is planned for the fourth quarter of 2020.

Danish Maritime Authority braces growth of safe electric ferries

The Danish Maritime authority is responsible on making sure that safety is part of the innovative efforts taking place in the Blue Denmark, as electric ferries are developing in an unprecedented rate. Consequently, DMA is cooperating with the industry and other authorities and classification societies to highlight the use of lithium-ion batteries in the shipping sector, mostly focusing on safety.
