The trade association Interferry welcomed the IMO's decision for a 20% correction in its Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) calculation formula for Ro-Ro and Ro-pax vessels. This decision is seen as an incentive to drive newbuild projects that have been obstructed by the current criteria. The decision can be applied immediately.

Quality, modernisation and transparency have been the three fundamental themes of the International Association of Classification Societies through 2017, as highlighted in its Annual Review which was presented in London by IACS Chairman Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen.

During his presentation at the last GREEN4SEA Conference, Mr. Antony Vourdachas, ABS, referred to the latest regulatory updates, including those related to air emissions as well. Presenting a regulation timetable from the top (2021), he attempted to clarify the regulatory landscape facing ship operators and owner.

Almost three-quarters of all new container ships, which emit around a quarter of global ship CO2 emissions, already comply with the post-2025 requirements of the IMO’s Energy Efficiency Design Index, according to a new study issued by Transport and Environment. 

On August 22, OOCL celebrated the christening of a 21,413 TEU newbuilding, constructed by SHI, designed with many green features that can help meet future environmental requirements. Named as OOCL Germany, the mega containership is the second of the six 21.000 TEU class vessels on order at the shipyard.

Commenting on IMO MEPC's outcome, Transport & Environment suggested that there is no substantial progress on tackling the global challenge of climate change. Disagreement over how to distribute efforts and the potential costs of measures remain the biggest obstacle to this progress. 

Recent improvements in the design efficiency of new ships went into reverse last year, a new study has found. According to the CE Delft study, the average design efficiency of new bulk carriers, oil tankers and gas carriers was worse in 2016 than in 2015 and the share of new ships complying with future efficiency standards also decreased.
