General Dynamics European Land Systems-Bridge Systems will develop a multifunctional, modular floating platform known as Pontoon Boat (PoBo). PoBo is a modularly configurable floating device, that can be used to assemble heavy-duty transport, working, diving and recovery platforms or bridges. The PoBo will be ergonomically friendly and will have a mobile virtual reality system to carry out fast and cost-effective training.

Petty Officer, Darren Carvell, a Royal Navy diver has been presented with the award of Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE), in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours for outstanding bravery and commitment to bomb disposal operations. During his time as a diver, Darren Carvell, was responsible for the safe disposal of more than 150 explosive ordnance devices. 

As IMCA informs, a diver had a major injury to his finger that could cause possible infection if he had not been decompressed. While the dive team was attempting to close a bell door, the door moved and pinched him causing a deep cut to his finger. 

Russian military divers dived in the Sea of Japan for the first time in the history of the Russian Navy and reached the depth of 416 meters. With the help of a diving complex they went into the depth, where they examined the underwater water area. They also conducted a training session on connecting the air supply hoses.

As IMCA informs, during the removal of a spool at 172msw, divers were conducting lift bag operations to relocate the spool to a wet store location. During the operation a series of events took place, which resulted in a diver's death. Investigations into the cause of the incident are currently underway.

Diving in icy water is extremely dangerous to humans. To protect US Navy divers operating in freezing conditions, the US Office of Naval Research is sponsoring work to design a wetsuit mirroring the insulating properties of animal blubber, allowing divers to swim in frozen waters for longer periods of time.

As IMCA notes, a saturation diver suffered a lost time injury to his left arm during subsea high-pressure water jetting operations. The incident took place when the water jet gun failed, and a part came off the gun. A mixture of causes led to this accident. Equipment failure, improper training and maintenance all played a significant role.

IMO awarded the 2018 IMO Award for Exceptional Bravery At Sea to Zhong Haifeng. Mr. Zhong is a rescue diver from China who made a series of underwater dives to rescue three people, when the cargo ship 'MV Jin Ze Lun' sank after colliding with another ship in Guangzhou Port, China, in the early morning of 27 November 2017.

IMCA informed of an unapproved repair of diver gas supply. A diver umbilical assembly was returned from a diving support vessel (DSV) to a shore-based workshop. During the demobilisation of the umbilical assembly, a repair was noticed on the diver gas supply hose. IMCA notes that repairs to a diver gas supply umbilical are not considered good practice.

After receiving a notification in November 2017 regarding a dangerous situation during saturation diving operations by DOF Subsea Australia, as part of the Ichthys project, Australia’s offshore regulator, the National Offshore Petroleum Safety and Environmental Management Authority started an investigation.
