Rolls-Royce, the Norwegian University of Technology Science, research organisation SINTEF Ocean, and classification society DNV GL have signed a memorandum of understanding, with the aim of creating an open source digital platform for use in the development of new ships.

MPA Singapore announced the launch of Smart Port Challenge 2017, that will synergise maritime industry players with start-ups and VC communities. The SPC aims to generate solutions, leveraging digital technologies such as IoT, data analytics and artificial intelligence, to tackle some of the most pressing challenges identified in consultation with the co-creators.

On the occasion of the Day of the Seafarer, Frank Coles, CEO of Transas, talks about the impact of the digital technologies on seafarers' role and welfare. Mr. Coles suggests that digitalization and automation will transform the industry by enhancing safety, but these are not enough to solve all safety-related problems, as crews with right skills and training is what the sector really needs.

In line with its plans to enhance digitalization in shipping, the Danish Maritime Authority announced that the Ship Station License has now become digital, reducing the number of administrative burdens imposed on the industry. The DMA has recently digitized other ship certificates too.

On the occasion of the Digital Assembly, on 15 -16 June, European seafarers and shipowners highlight the importance that shipping is better served by smart digital solutions, to finally decrease the administrative burden they face. Shipping today is still hampered by endless paperwork, which causes detriment of the crew and affects the overall smooth shipping operations.

ClassNK said that it will commence operation of the world’s first comprehensive electronic certificate service for classification and statutory certificates, starting from 15 June 2017. The service, ClassNK e-Certificate, will first be made available to Liberian-flagged vessels on the ClassNK register exclusively.

MarineFields and Inmarsat have signed a MoU, to partner in investigating how sea traffic management and satellite connectivity can make port calls more efficient for all stakeholders. The joint effort will be focused on providing port call optimization services resulting in just-in-time operations and shortened turn-around times.

Anastasios Papagiannopoulos, CEO of Common Progress, has been appointed as the new President of BIMCO revealing that digitalization will be one of the priorities on his agenda during his two-year presidential term. The new BIMCO President will also focus on reducing the administrative burden for shippers and on the efficient implementation of environmental regulations across the industry.

At Nor-Shipping 2017, NYK and DNV GL presented the first results of an ongoing maritime data center pilot project. The data center collects operational data from NYK vessels on DNV GL’s recently launched Veracity industry data platform, for monitoring vessel performance and condition-based maintenance schemes.

DNV GL held its traditional press conference at the first day of Nor-Shipping trade fair. This year, the event took place on the impressive Vision of the Fjords, a DNV GL-classed carbon fibre, hybrid ferry.
