Cyprus opts education to develop its maritime sector

Cyprus's maritime industry turns to education aiming to invest in the development of the marine sector that has placed Cyprus flag 11th biggest registry and amongst the top three ship-management hubs. Cyprus maritime schools aim to promote marine professions in order to boost shipping companies, while in the meantime plans are being conducted in order to add maritime training in the technical schools.

GPS interference reported in Mediterranean and Red Seas

U.S. Maritime Advisory 2018-014 informs of a continued GPS interference by vessels and aircraft operating in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea It is causing the alternation of GPS signals and affects the navigation and communication of vessels. GPS interference is causing the loss or the alternation of GPS signals affecting bridge navigation, GPS-based timing and communications equipment.

Cyprus plans to purchase FSRU

Cyprus will start a tender to purchase an FSRU next month at Vasiliko. The tender will also include the acquisition of relevant infrastructure, and aims at increasing the country's ability to import LNG and use it for electricity generation. This development comes after the Cypriot Energy Minister Giorgos Lakkotrypis submitted an MoU between for the removal of fuel storage facilities at Larnaca to Vasiliko.

Greece, Cyprus, Malta ask for less bureaucracy to boost shipping sector

Panagiotis Kouroumplis, noted that EU has to find new ways to make shipping industry more attractive. From his side, the Maltese transport minister, Ian Borg, mentioned that there is work happening to examine today's EU directives that create the administrative burden. Natasa Pilides, Cyprus's Deputy Minister for Shipping Natasa Pilides, informed that the three discussed about possible measures to enhance cooperation.
