UNCTAD informed that it now acknowledges PortCDM as an enabler for improved performance in short sea shipping based on a study made on the role of enhanced collaboration and data sharing between ports for better performance in short sea shipping. This study chooses to focus on short sea shipping in the Eastern Mediterranean for port calls made in Port of Limassol, Cyprus, and was published in the Sustainability Journal.

As InCyprus reported, Cyprus has an emergency plan in place, under the possibility that a hard Brexit might follow, even though it is being kept at low profile. Sources from the Deputy Ministry stated that the UK will be considered a third country in accordance with EU rules and regulations.

Cyprus has seen merchant shipping developing rapidly over the last decades, ranking the country amongst the main maritime powers of the world with the 11th largest fleet globally and the 3rd largest fleet in Europe. More than 20% of the worlds’ third party management fleet is managed by companies based in Cyprus.

During the 219 SAFETY4SEA Cyprus Conference, Dr. John Kokarakis, Director Technical Business Development, HBSA Zone, Bureau Veritas, provided an in-depth overview of all the environmentally-friendly marine fuel solutions for compliance with the 2020 sulphur cap.

The construction of the new industrial port of Vassilikos is expected to begin operations in 2023, as Cyprus News Agency reports. The port will operate as a service centre for the oil and gas industry in Cyprus and the wider region, and its costs will be around €250 million.

During the 2019 SAFETY4SEA Cyprus Conference, Mr. David Nichol, Senior Loss Prevention Executive, UK P&I Club, focused on accidents relating to entry into enclosed spaces onboard ships, which ‘continue to blight the shipping industry’. The dangers associated with enclosed spaces are well known – so why the unremitting level of casualties?

Cyprus is committed in implementing the 2020 sulphur cap, despite worries within the shipping industry regarding safety, quality, compatibility and availability of the new fuels that will enter the market. What is more, Deputy Minister for Shipping Natasa Pilides, said that the government will take all necessary measures to supervise the proper implementation of the regulation. 

ExxonMobil along with partner Qatar Petroleum completed their drilling operation of the second exploration well in the Block 10 offshore Cyprus and has made a gas discovery. The Ministry of Energy, Commerce and Industry said the well, named Glaucus-1, had been successfully completed.

The 2019 SAFETY4SEA Conference in Cyprus successfully concluded on Wednesday 20th of February, at the Columbia Plaza in Limassol, attracting 250 delegates from a total of 130 organizations. Experts shared their views on industry’s critical issues such as the upcoming 2020 global sulphur cap, IMO’s ambitious emission reduction targets and loss prevention challenges.

Cyprus’ deputy minister for shipping stated that the number of companies that are developing their headquarters in the small east Mediterranean island nation has almost doubled in the last six years. This reflects Cyprus' growing appeal as a maritime business hub. Shipping accounts for around 7% of Cyprus’ economy.
