East Med’s cruise sector calls for infrastructure improvements

Representatives of the cruise industry in the East Mediterranean highlighted some of the obstacles the sector faces, such as regional volatility and small available pool of cruise-ready ports. The Greek Minister of Tourism, Thanasis Theocharopoulos, noted, during the 5th Posidonia Sea Tourism Forum in Athens that the challenges will not be surpassed if the cruise infrastructure won't improve.

Cruise season at Panama Canal closes

The Panama Canal reported the closing of the 2018-2019 cruise season. The closing was marked with the transit of the Panamax cruise ship Pacific Princess, with a capacity of 670 passengers, which took place on May 22. From October 1, 2018 to September 30, 2019, the Panama Canal will register 242 transits of passenger ships with over 260,000 passengers.

Hurtigruten, partner to power vessels with dead fish

Hurtigruten, expedition cruise line signed a deal with Norway-based Biokraft to supply climate-neutral liquified biogas (LBG) – and power ships with fuel made from dead fish and other organic waste. The partnership includes near-daily delivery of biogas produced from organic waste to Hurtigruten ships, the first cruise ships in the world to be powered by fossil-free LBG.

Monitors to track cruise ships emissions in Greenwich

An £80,000 network of air pollution monitors, funded by the Port of London Authority, is now in place, ready to record the effect of emissions locally from cruise ships docking in Greenwich this summer. The eight monitoring stations are located close to the Greenwich Ship Tier landing stage. They will capture data all day long, with the raw data available at the websites of both the PLA and Breathe London.

Carnival cruise ship crew rescues man after falling overboard

Crewmembers of the Carnival Fascination managed to rescue a man that went overboard on May 18. As Carnival informs, the passenger had jumped from Deck 10, with the crew and passengers immediately notifying the bridge team of the incident. Once informed of the incident, the bridge team returned the vessel to the location of the incident. The captain then deployed a rescue boat, with the crew bringing the victim back onboard.
