The South Carolina Ports Authority welcomed two new ship-to-shore cranes at the Wando Welch Terminal, to further enhance the handling of neo-Panamax vessels. The cranes arrived at the port just a day prior to the beginning of Charleston Harbor Deepening Project construction. 

A formal ceremony was held at Terminal de Contenedores de Moín in Costa Rica, on February 23rd to commemorate the arrival of the facility’s first three Ship-to-Shore cranes and six Rubber-Tire Gantry Cranes. The new deep-water facility, on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast, will open in February 2019, propelling Costa Rica into a new role as a key global logistics hub for the region.

The Northwest Seaport Alliance ordered eight new super-post-Panamax cranes from Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries in China through a competitive bid process, as no container cranes currently are manufactured in the US. Four cranes arrived Friday and four more cranes will arrive in 2019.

Container Terminal 9 North in Tsing Yi held an opening ceremony, launching its remote-controlled rubber-tyred gantry cranes and automated container stacking system. CT9 North is the first container terminal in Hong Kong with remotely operated cranes. The new cranes are expected to be 20% more efficient and productive than manual ones.

As the Port of Philadelphia’s $392 million Main Channel Deepening Project reaches completion and cargo volumes are surging, the port expects next month the first two of the four super post-Panamax cranes due at the Port’s Packer Avenue Marine Terminal.

The 3 super post-panamax quay cranes have an outreach of 24 rows and are capable of handling some of the largest mega-vessels. All Terminal D quay and yard cranes will be operated by remote control technology, becoming the first terminal of its type in the world to fully install this technology for safer handling of containers.

The super post-Panamax cranes were built by ZPMC in Shanghai and can accommodate 20,000 TEU vessels, thus giving the facility an annual container capacity of 5 million TEUs. The new deep-water terminal at the Tanger- Med II port complex will have both conventional and fully-automated operations.

Asian Hercules III, one of the world’s largest and most versatile floating cranes, has arrived in Peterhead Port, in order to conduct 11 innovative bucket foundations for Vattenfall’s European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre.

China Merchants Industry Holdings, a fully owned subsidiary of Hong Kong-based China Merchants Group, will construct the largest LNG-fueled semi-submersible crane vessel in the world for Holding OOS International Group B.V. The basic design is already in progress.
