The world's largest cruise company, Carnival Corporation, announced the imminent launch of its cruise joint venture with China's largest shipbuilder, China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), under the name 'CSSC Carnival Cruise Shipping Limited'. The new China-based cruise company plans to operate its own fleet to serve Chinese cruise passengers by the end of 2019.

A Carnival cruise ship listed heavily to its side while en route to the Caribbean, causing a minute of panic for the passengers. The incident was reported a few hours after the 'Carnival Sunshine' left the Port Canaveral in Florida, on Sunday evening. Photos released through social media depict the inside of the ship with plates, bottles, silverware, glassware and even tables crashing to the floor.

A number of cruise lines have changed their routes ahead of hurricane Florence. Namely, Royal Caribbean, Carnival Cruise Line, and Norwegian Cruise Line altered their itineraries in order to avoid the hurricane, which was said to become a major hurricane by Monday, September 10.

At approximately 10 pm Wednesday, the cruise ship 'Carnival Fascination' responded to a distress signal from a small fishing boat that was 25 nautical miles from Barbados. The boat had run out of fuel and was adrift and the two fishermen were taken aboard the cruise ship.

On the early morning hours of Tuesday, the cruise ship 'Carnival Horizon', Carnival's newest vessel, hit the pier 90, while mooring at Pier 88 in the Manhattan Cruise Terminal, causing damages to the dock. Upon investigation, the US Coast Guard cleared the ship to sail.

The Canaveral Port Authority and Carnival Cruise Line agreed on a new state-of-the-art terminal able to accommodate Carnival’s new 180,000-ton ship, which is expected to launch in 2020. Construction of the 180,000-ton cruise ship will begin in November 2018. The ship will be powered by LNG.

The German arm of the Women’s International Shipping & Trading Association, WISTA Germany e.V, based in Hamburg, elected a new board of directors at the beginning of July, and for the first time a representative of Carnival Maritime, Cindy Paarmann, has taken a place on the board.

Carnival Corporation released its eighth annual sustainability report, announcing that in 2017 it achieved its 25% carbon reduction goal three years ahead of schedule and is on track with its nine other 2020 sustainability goals. The company continues its sustainability journey, using the United Nation’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

A group of major British businesses and trade bodies gathered on 6 July in Southampton, to ink a new charter aimed at tackling gender diversity in the maritime sector. The parties signed the 'Women in Maritime pledge', a statement of intent to improve fairness, equality and inclusion in the sector.
