A worker onboard the Terra Nova FPSO, off the east coast of Canada, was injured Sunday, after falling from a ladder while conducting gas testing, the operator informed in an official statement. The offshore medic and emergency response team were called to the scene.

University of Toronto researchers have developed a new strategy to remove tiny oil droplets from wastewater with more than 90% efficiency in just 10 minutes, using a sponge. The work continued expertise from a previous prototype, that could remove more than 95% of the oil in the samples tested.

The Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board (C-NLOPB) issued a notice of non-compliance and an order to suspend production-related operations on the Terra Nova Floating, Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel, operated by Suncor Energy about 350 kilometres east of St. John’s.

On December 5, an unexpected fire started inside the engine room of the Canadian-flagged Handy bulker Tecumseh, while the vessel was sailing near Zug Island on the United States’ side of the Detroit River. The ship eventually drifted into Canadian waters as for the time being is anchored by Windsor, Ontario. 

According to a new study commissioned by WWF-Canada, 30 scrubber-equipped ships dumped nearly 35 million tonnes of washwater effluent off the BC coast in 2017. The report highlights that these harmful discharges put killer whales and other species at risk, with cruise ships being responsible for 90% of these discharges.

The Chamber of Marine Commerce commented that the possibility of closing the St. Lawrence Seaway in December - which aims at accommodating higher water outflow at the Moses-Saunders dam in December - will have a negative impact to the Canadian and US economies of $193 million/per week.

The US Coast Guard announced it is finalizing the policy harmonizing personal flotation device standards between the US and Canada by accepting a new standard for approval of PFDs. This will enable PFD manufacturers to meet a single North American standard instead of separate standards.

Officials are trying to refloat a barge that ran aground, damaging its hull on Quadra Island, British Columbia, on November 9. As Transport Canada informed, it is now considering a salvage plan, and when the barge is refloated, it will be towed to a facility near Campbell River for repairs.

To help mitigate the increased need for LNG in the maritime sector, the British Columbia government is joining the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority and FortisBC to create the first ship-to-ship LNG marine bunkering service on the west coast of North America.

After the Canadian-flagged self discharging bulk carrier 'RT Honorable Paul Martin' ran aground on the American side of the St. Lawrence Seaway, on 6 October, it has now been refloated and anchored outside of the port of Johnstown, Ontario. The ship is now waiting for repairs.
