In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, Transport Canada issued a bulletin concerning the mobility of asymptomatic workers in the shipping sector. Specifically, according to the bulletin, exemption is provided allowing Marine Sector Workers who have to travel to Canada to perform their duties, to board an international flight destined to Canada.

In light of the COVID-19 oubtreak, all Canadian Port Authorities and Halifax Port Authority informed that remain operational and continue their cargo trade. Yet, the movement of containerized cargo ships has not been impacted by the pandemic.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) issued an investigation report on a lifeboat release hook failure during a drill on the passenger ferry 'Northern Ranger' in October 2017, which led to minor injuries. The failure was linked to poor compliance with SOLAS and operator's manual. 

As part of its concrete efforts to protect the endangered North Atlantic right whale over the last years, the Government of Canada now announced enhanced 2020 measures that will help reduce the risks to these marine mammals during the 2020 season from April to November.

US Coast Guard and the Canadian Coast Guard signed the newly revised Dixon Entrance Annex to the national Canada-United States Joint Marine Pollution Contingency Plan in Juneau.
