BV launches Maritime Pilot Phase for its Single Window for Foreign Trade in Togo

Bureau Veritas Group, with their partner Soget, have launched the pilot phase of the Single Window concession for maritime imports into Togo. The pilot phase allows the testing of the electronic platform for its technical and organizational dimensions and will permit the assessment of user acceptance. The arrival of ships at the port of Lomé will determine which players will be selected to participate in the Pilot Phase. All other players in the import trading community traffic will then be gradually merged into the scheme based upon the scalability over the next few weeks. The pilot phase will reduce the medium term optimal deployment of Single Window for different types of transport and all other logistical industries of Togo. This trade facilitation platform is available 24h/7 in a simplified but secure environment for each stage of the supply chain. According to Olivier LEDERER, Managing Director of SEGUCE Togo, "this innovative solution meets the requirements of trade facilitation. It reduces the time and costs related to commercial transactions and related logistic operations simplifying procedures for import, export and transit, and to improve transparency in relations between business community and the authorities." Imtech Marine invites integrated thinking for efficiency gains

High revenue-earning ships need a fresh approach to systems integration to take full advantage of available efficiency gains, according to technical service provider Imtech Marine. Imtech believes that greater vessel efficiencies are available by integrating technology onboard and data management ashore to create ‘SMART' infrastructure. Meijer adds, "With the complete package we can provide, we are uniquely able to connect hardware, processes, data and people and help to create smart operations and integrated fleet management." An illustration of the benefits available from integration have been provided by performance results from Hallaig, the first diesel electric, hybrid ferry for Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMAL), which came in service in 2013. Imtech Marine's hybrid DE plus rechargeable battery technology, its Energy Management System and onboard systems optimisation combined to cut the fuel bill by 38%, against a target of 20%. Eric Clarke, Director Service Americas, says: "There are obvious reasons to upgrade to state-of-the-art technology, but some of the advantages only become available when systems fit together. Control settings can be customised to individual crew or corporate level needs, for example. More specifically, part of the Westerdam project involved optimising the interface between the autopilot and the podded propulsors to deliver fuel ...

Software helps to optimise access channels to ports

Probabilistic tidal window determination application - PROTIDE (Image Credit: Charta Software) BMT ARGOSS (BMT), a subsidiary of BMT Group Ltd and Charta Software have announced a partnership to develop a robust, multi-functional software package, called METRIS, (Modelsysteem voor Evaluatie Tijpoortregeling en RIsico'S bodemberoering), meaning ‘Model system to evaluate tidal admission policy and risk of seabed touchdown', for the Dutch Directorate-General. The partnership aims to meet the client's needs by combining BMT's expertise in heading analysis, vessel response behaviour, weather forecasting and shallow water metocean conditions, with Charta's ability to deliver high quality software. METRIS will provide a comprehensive hindcast assessment tool to test the performance of admission and dredging policy based on the probability of seabed touch down of vessels in anchorage areas and access channels to ports. Ernst Bolt, Sr. Advisor from the Dutch Directorate-General comments: "The main factor restricting admission of deep-draught ships to ports is the risk of bottom contact. We want to ensure that we are making best use of our approach channels. For ships restricted to our access channels, the Dutch Directorate maintains a guaranteed nautical depth for a total distance of over 100 km to accommodate deep draught vessels sailing to the three large ...

BOP drift variations adding to safety

The Subsea Company recently launched 16 standard drifts, designed in accordance with API 16A, Third Edition. Many companies are using these drifts to satisfy API 53 requirements as a worst-case safe guard in order to meet compliance and improve overall performance. The Subsea Company engineered the new BOP Drift configurations to allow for quick and safe drifting of BOPs. Designed, tested and certified to withstand years of service in an offshore environment, these innovative configurations improve the overall safety for Drifting Blow Out Preventers. The Subsea Company's BOP Drifts help reduce potential downtime issues, thus saving oil & gas companies, OEMs and drilling contractors time & money. The Subsea Company's Drift designs are manufactured with several different connection options and are engineered with "True Precision" balance to ensure optimal and reliable performance. Each drift is built around a perfectly concentric mandrel and has the ability to transfer mass load to the solid straight bar center shafts and lifting eyes. The pad-eye versions are pull tested at 4,500 lbs. while the drill pipe versions are tested at 15,000 lbs. Drift total weights vary from 320 lbs. to 1,285 lbs. depending on connection option and mandrel length. The precisely machined components are ...

BSEE and Texas A&M partner to train Oil Spill Responders Group

The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement's (BSEE) national oil spill response research and renewable energy test facility, Ohmsett, in partnership with the Texas A&M National Spill Control School, held the Oil Spill Response Strategies and Tactics Training course. Fourteen attendees representing the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Columbia and Uruguay traveled to the Ohmsett facility in Leonardo, N.J. to participate in this four-day course where participants increased their spill response proficiency by using boom and skimmers to practice removing spilled oil. With a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on tank exercises, students learned contingency planning, fates and effects of spilled oil, how to set up an incident command system, what strategies to use during a spill and what equipment to deploy for successful response operations. Upon completion of the course, students received a Certification of Completion from the National Spill Control School. ABB confirms fuel savings on ships from Onboard DC Grid

ABB released third-party verification that its Onboard DC Grid helps vessels reduce their fuel consumption, cut noise and trim their environmental impact. The measurements and tests, conducted by Pon Power in collaboration with ABB on Myklebusthaug Offshore's platform supply vessel "Dina Star," identified reduction of specific fuel oil consumption of up to 27 percent. These are the first documented results from a vessel outfitted with ABB's Onboard DC Grid, which allows engines to run at variable speeds for top fuel efficiency at each load level. The tests also measured fuel consumption in dynamic positioning operations during challenging weather conditions, identifying fuel savings of 14 percent. Dynamic positioning operations, where computers automatically maintain a vessel's position and heading, account for a considerable portion of a typical offshore vessel's operational profile. "Our Onboard DC Grid is a significant step forward for electric propulsion. We are pleased that the concept delivered results that exceed our expectations", said Veli-Matti Reinikkala, head of ABB's Process Automation division. "Onboard DC Grid is a competitive advantage to ship owners operating a wide range of ship types from offshore vessels to ferries and yachts seeking to increase fuel efficiency and reduce emissions." In addition to fuel consumption, Pon ...
