Winds over 80 km/h broke MSC vessel's mooring line in Brazil. The vessel involved is the MSC Ajaccio and the incident took place at the port of Paranaguá in Brazil, on Sunday 4th of November. The rope snapped and it almost sounds like a gunshot going off.

Brazilian energy major Petrobras (Petróleo Brasileiro S.A.) announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Norwegian oil major Equinor to evaluate a joint business development in the offshore wind energy industry in Brazil.

Petrobras agreed with US and Brazilian authorities to pay $853.2 million in penalties to resolve the US government’s investigation into violations of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act in connection with Petrobras’s role in facilitating payments to politicians and political parties in Brazil, as well as a related Brazilian investigation. 

Russian gas producer Novatek announced that its wholly owned subsidiary, Novatek Gas and Power Asia Pte. Ltd., has shipped its first LNG cargo to the Brazilian market with LNG produced from the Yamal LNG project. The cargo was delivered to the Bahia Regasification Terminal owned by Petrobras.

Maersk called Brazilian exporters to stop overbooking as this practice leads to delays when shipping goods transported in containers. In addition, Maersk said that overbooking damages exporters as well, as costs are raised, while many exporters do not find space in ships.

A new Migration Law entered into force in Brazil in November 2017. Seafarers entering Brazil on ocean-going vessels can stay up to 90 days in each migratory year without a visa provided they carry valid seaman’s books issued by a country signatory to the ILO Identity Documents Convention.

The 1994-built very large ore carrier 'Stellar Samba', owned by the South Korean company Polaris Shipping, was stuck for days off the Brazilian coast, after it sustained fire at its generator on 26 May. Initial estimations suggest that the fire erupted in one of the ship's generators reportedly due to an oil leakage.

MODEC, Mitsui & Co, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Marubeni and Mitsui E&S Holdings, agreed that Mitsui, MOL, Marubeni and Mitsui E&S will invest in a long-term charter business to provide a floating production, storage, and offloading system for use in the Mero field off the coast of Brazil. The FPSO will be chartered for 22 years.

To improve the health of the ocean ecosystems and protect the species living in them, Brazil created two new marine protected areas. The protected areas accommodate a rich marine life, including sharks, turtles, rays and whales. This development increases the Brazilian marine protected areas from the 1,5% to 24,5%, surpassing the target set by the Convention on Biological Diversity.

Brazil is facing a severe outbreak of yellow fever, having experienced a significant increase in the number of fatal cases and the geographic spread of the disease in the last few months. The yellow fever virus is transmitted by infected mosquitoes. The disease is endemic in tropical areas of Africa, Central America and South America, including some areas of Brazil, notably in the North and Centre‐West Regions.
