The European Commission announced partnership with the European Investment Fund, part of the European Investment Bank (EIB), to launch the BlueInvest Fund, a €75 million equity investment fund for the blue economy.

The Maritime Authority of Jamaica (MAJ) reported that the importance of the Caribbean maritime sector depends heavily on the successful implementation of international regulations, adding that the livelihood of most Caribbeans depends on the shipping industry.

The Australian government announced launch of the largest ever Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) to drive an evolution in marine-based industries, unlocking economic, environmental and technological benefits for a Blue Economy. 

Our oceans are critical to so many aspects of our day-to-day lives. In the UK alone, they provide jobs for over 500,000 people, contribute more than £47 billion to the economy, and are the means through which 95% of all trade reaches the UK. Globally, people rely on the ocean for trade, food, energy and other valuable resources, as well as enabling environmental protection and international aid.

Jamaica's Minister of Transport and Mining, Hon Robert Montague, discussed about the importance of the Blue Economy to Jamaica and the measures taken to support the Jamaican maritime sector. For Jamaica the ocean is an invaluable resource that has a lot of potentials for economic development and job creation.

The Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) Dr. Dakuku Peterside highlighted that the Agency remains committed to growing the ideals of the blue economy by bringing to the fore adequate knowledge of the sector in line with the capacity building drive of the Agency.

As part of its efforts to help African countries improve the sustainability of their maritime sectors and their blue economies, IMO has participated in two major annual maritime security exercises in Djibouti and in Maputo, Mozambique, to help support their initiatives.

A discussion paper published by Stable Seas and One Earth Future explores the vital roles of women in the Sub-Saharan African maritime space, as well as the numerous challenges they face in entering these roles. The brief explores the role of gender in maritime across four issue areas: rule of law, coastal welfare, blue economy, and maritime mixed migration.
