Singaporean-based tonnage provider Eastern Pacific Shipping (EPS) has appointed GoodFuels to supply biofuel bunkers for its 2010-built 47,377 deadweight tonne MR tanker M/T Pacific Beryl.

MSC is considering the use of hydrogen and fuels derived from it as a potential fuel source for the future for container shipping.

In its recently launched Energy Outlook, BP forecasts that the fuel mix for decarbonization in the shipping sector up to 2050 is able to diversify into hydrogen, either as ‎ammonia or in liquid form, and LNG, as well as biofuels.

ExxonMobil has conducted a successful sea trial using the company’s first marine bio fuel oil with shipping company Stena Bulk, bunkered in the port of Rotterdam.

The Dutch company Titan LNG, recently received €11 million funding from the European Union concerning its bio-LNG project.

Stena Bulk successfully completed marine biofuel trials on the 49646 deadweight tonne MR tanker, "Stena Immortal". Specifically, the MR tanker received the first delivery of Bio Fuel Oil in its recent call at the Port of Rotterdam, supplied by GoodFuels.

VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland along with several collaborators are exploring how fuel oils made from biomass and waste plastics can be suitable for power plants and ship diesel engines. Through their research, partners aim to determine the most ecologically and economically sustainable ways for fossil fuels' replacement.

During the coming weeks Stena Bulk will perform a test running on an MR tanker on 100% biofuel. The fuel is the MR1-100 bio-fuel oil, produced from used cooking oil and supplied by GoodFuels in Rotterdam.

IMO has developed an ambitious target to achieve a minimum of 50% reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050. However, to keep in line with this target, shipping industry must trust alternative fuels, that will lead it into the decarbonized future.

The US Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) Annual Energy Outlook 2020 (AEO2020) projects that US biofuel production will slowly increse through 2050, mainly driven by economic and policy factors.
