VISEDO to Power Up World’s Largest Electric Ferry

The Finnish electric drive train specialist VISEDO has been selected as the sole electric-system supplier for the world's largest fully electric ferryboat to be built by the Danish shipbuilder Søby Shipyard Ltd. The ferry will be introduced in June, 2017 to transportation of vehicles and passengers between the island Ærø and the mainland in Denmark. The Finnish ground-breaking innovative electric drive specialist was preferred over the industry giant Siemens which was the previous candidate for the delivery. As one of the Top 5 projects in the EU Horizon 2020 initiative, a program with a total budget of 21 million euros, this initiative is part of the Danish Natura project, which guarantees local people green transportation in these areas. The ferry will be a state-of-the-art design and will achieve efficiency gains by optimizing weight by integrating lighter materials and equipment. It will reduce the CO2 emission by 2000 tons and NOx emissions by 41,500 kg per year. The silent electric propulsion system from Visedo will also reduce the emitted noise level compared to diesel engine operation. In addition, the vessel will reduce wake waves right behind the ferry by 60-70% and it will be able to navigate in the EU ...

Port of Gothenburg invests in solar power panels

The Port of Gothenburg is currently investing in solar power panels. A 250 square metre solar panel array will be installed on the roof of the head office. Once completed, it will be the most efficient solar panel facility in western Sweden. The Port of Gothenburg expects to save SEK 60,000 in energy costs each year. A 250 square metre solar panel array is currently being installed on the roof of Amerikaskjulet, which is the building in which the Port of Gothenburg has its head office. The panels will generate 55 megawatt-hours of electricity each year – equivalent to around five per cent of the building's total energy consumption. "The Port of Gothenburg aims to be climate neutral. With this new facility our head office will be more energy efficient," said Edvard Molitor, Senior Manager Environment at the Port of Gothenburg. The Port of Gothenburg also estimates that it will save SEK 60,000 in energy costs each year. Most efficient solar panel array in western Sweden The panels that have been chosen are among the best available. Once installation has been completed in June it will be the most efficient solar panel array in western Sweden, calculated in terms ...

EMP completes Aquarius MAS + Solar evaluation trials

As a result of the recent successful completion of sea trials on-board the high speed car and passenger ferry, Blue Star Delos, Eco Marine Power (EMP) has now cleared the Aquarius MAS + Solar and Aquarius Marine Solar Power solutions for commercial release. During two days of testing and evaluation on the 17th and 19th May, 2015, the performance of the Aquarius MAS + Solar trial system on-board Delos was assessed by both EMP and Blue Star Ferries technical personnel as part of the Blue Star Delos Renewable Energy Innovation Project. Aquarius MAS + Solar is a renewable energy solution for ships and the trial system includes a 2.3 kWp marine solar panel array, a 5.4 kWhr battery pack, MPPT charge controllers, a marine computer plus associated communications and interface devices. This allows the Aquarius MAS to provide the crew with real-time information regarding the ship's fuel oil consumption (FOC) plus calculate the vessels Nox, Sox and CO2 emissions. The two days of testing and evaluation were conducted as Blue Star Delos sailed on its route though the Aegean Sea from Piraeus to Paros, Naxos, Ios, Santorini and then back to the Port of Piraeus via Ios, Naxos and Paros ...

BV Publishes Current And Tidal Turbines Guidelines

International classification society and certification group Bureau Veritas has published a set of guidelines, NI 603, intended to help the development of current and tidal turbines. The guidelines are backed by a separate guide to certification for marine renewable energy devices including tidal turbines, wave energy converters and ocean thermal energy conversion. Philippe Donche-Gay, Executive Vice-President and Head of the Marine & Offshore Division of Bureau Veritas says, “Marine renewable energy offers promising sources of clean energy. Emerging technologies that generate electricity by harnessing the power of tidal streams, waves and temperature gradients, are moving from research phase to commercial use. We think that over the next five to ten years, the number of tidal turbines in particular is set to multiply. There is a clear need for standards and certification in this fast-developing field.” To ensure the commercial viability of their projects, designers and operators involved inmarine energy must be able to demonstrate their technologies are safe and offer high quality and reliability. This can be complex in an emerging sector with no real track record, and where international standards are still under development.  NI 603 Current and Tidal Turbines sets down guidelines applicable to current and tidal ...

Wave energy system inspired by Human Heart

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MckUued2PkA The Swedish Energy Agency has granted the company Corpower Ocean AB 2 million EUR to conduct tests of its innovative concept for wave power. The project is part of a larger collaboration with KIC InnoEnergy, the Spanish energy company Iberdrola and the Portuguese Research Institute WavEC Offshore Renewables. Corpower will build a new prototype wave power plant and install it in the sea off Scotland. The wave power plant is inspired by the pumping principles of the human heart. CorPower founder Stig Lundbäck, MD, spent most of his life studying the pumping principles of the human heart. He invented the Dynamic Adaptive Piston Pump Technology (DAPPT) in 1984, and used his comprehensive knowledge to imagine and construct a wave power plant based on similar principles. The wave power plant has in recent years been supplemented with advanced control technology developed at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim. In the outbreak, I was frank with you propecia before and after has changed my subsistence. MARAD Testing Alternative Power for Vessels

USTS Kennedy (in 2005 as USTS Enterprise) / Image credit: Wikipedia The Maritime Administration (MARAD) has announced that it is testing state-of-the-art, environmentally efficient technology onboard the Training Ship (TS) Kennedy. The National Defense Reserve Fleet vessel was provided to the Massachusetts Maritime Academy by MARAD for Cadet training.  This one-year undertaking is part of a MARAD initiative to test fuel cells as a source of power for shipboard electrical systems.  Researchers will evaluate the performance of the fuel cell technology and how low sulfur marine diesel fuel can be used to efficiently power a fuel cell to produce auxiliary power.  Unlike using low sulfur fuel in diesel engine generators to provide electrical power, the system produces no harmful air emissions.
