The US Department of Defense issued its Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy as part of its efforts to accelerate the adoption of AI and the creation of a force fit for today. The strategy seeks to harness the potential of AI to transform all functions of the Department positively, thereby supporting US servicemembers, but not replacing them. 

MSC Cruises launched ZOE, the world's first virtual personal cruise assistant using artificial intelligence technology. ZOE is a voice-enabled artificial intelligence tool, that will be located in every stateroom. The technology provides information depending on the cruise, while it also speaks seven languages. ZOE will be firstly launched on MSC Bellissimma and then will be available in every ship, including future ones. 

The Finnish Geospatial Research Institute and Aalto University will cooperate with maritime solution providers Fleetrange and Tallink Grupp on a project to develop autonomous shipping. Mainly, the project's goal is to create a system that automatically identifies and recognizes objects, such as navigation aids and other vessels around the ship, improving situational awareness.

MIT announced a $1 billion plan to create a new college for AI. Namely, MIT will create a new college that includes AI, machine learning, and data science with other academic disciplines. It would be considered as the largest financial investment in AI by any US academic institution to date. Headquartered in a new building on MIT's campus, the new MIT Schwarzman College of Computing will be a hub for work in computer science, AI, data science, and related fields.

The 2019 SMART4SEA Conference successfully concluded on Wednesday 30st of January, at Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) at the Bookcastle of the National Library of Greece, attracting 600 delegates representing a total of 270 organizations.

BP Ventures has invested $5 million in Artificial Intelligence and named it 'Sandy', aiming to improve its upstream digital capabilities. This investment, boosts the company's continuous work on exploring opportunities to apply machine learning and cognitive computing in its global oil and gas business. It is directed at the Houston technology start-up Belmont Technology, a company that has developed a cloud-based geoscience platform using artificial intelligence (AI).

Iswaran, Singapore's Minister for Communications and Information, has unveiled a model governance framework for artificial intelligence (AI), aimed to be adopted by companies in Singapore and globally, to tackle with issues that have emerged with new technology.

Namely, AI and robotic solutions can create models to predict behavior or results more accurately.

In mid-2017, the industry was shaken by a major cyber-attack against Maersk, the world’s largest container shipping company, which led the sector to adopt a new look at cyber security issues. 2018 validated this trend as cyber incidents continued affecting operators, ports, and shipbuilders.
