Although the COVID-19 pandemic has brought several negative impacts within the shipping community, South Korea managed to rank second, following China, concerning shipbuilding orders.
As Yonhap news agency reports, Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. and others won orders totaling 230.000 compensated gross tons (CGTs) to build eight ships during April, far behind by the Chinese shipbuilders which bagged 730.000 CGTs in orders to build 38 vessels.
For the records, Russia came third in the list, as its shipbuilders secured 65.000 CGTs in orders to build seven vessels last month.
Following Russia was Japan, with 55,000 CGTs in orders for two vessels.
For the records, China kept its leading position concerning shipbuilding orders, marking 61% of the vessels’ orders globally, while South Korea noted 17%.
Concluding, amid COVID-19 outbreak, global shipbuilding orders increased for the second straight month. According to Clarkson Research Services, shipbuilding orders totaled 1.14 million CGTs last month, up from 890,000 CGTs in March.
