SAFETY4SEA is pleased to announce the distinguished shortlisted nominees for the 2025 GREEN4SEA Awards, following an online nomination process, initiated a few months ahead, where industry stakeholders proposed nominations. The aim of the awards is to recognize those organizations that demonstrated outstanding performance within the scope of fostering green and sustainable shipping.
The online voting process has started at events.safety4sea.com/2025-green4sea-virtual-awards/ where participants can cast their votes online up to 24th of January, 2025. The winners will be the ones attracted the most online votes and the results will be announced at a dedicated special event on Wednesday 12th of March 2025, at the Lighthouse of Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC), at the closing of the 14th GREEN4SEA Athens Forum.
GREEN4SEA Sustainability Award
To be awarded to an organization that promoted an ESG agenda and contributed towards sustainable shipping
- International Bunker Industry Association (IBIA) has been nominated for advocating for a review of the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII). IBIA, again in collaboration with other industry associations, presented to the IMO the views of the marine fuel production and supply industry and what they consider will be needed to support the deployment of alternative fuels for maritime use.
- International Windship Association (IWSA) has been nominated for advocating for the Decade of Wind Propulsion (2021-2030) and its significant efforts to promote wind propulsion as a key decarbonization measure. IWSA emphasizes the potential of wind propulsion as both a retrofit and new-build solution for the shipping industry.
- MacGregor has been nominated for the launch of its Carbon Calculator, designed to help container shipping companies estimate the CO2 emissions they can reduce by upgrading cargo systems on existing vessels. Reflecting MacGregor’s commitment to sustainable shipping, the tool is available for free on the company’s website.
- Maritime Battery Forum has been nominated for exploring the role of batteries in the decarbonization of the maritime industry, focusing on energy storage, life-cycle assessment, operational range, and the potential for standardization to accelerate the adoption of safe maritime battery solutions globally among others.
- UCL Energy Institute has been nominated for leading a world-class research group dedicated to the decarbonization of the shipping sector. The institute plays a key role in researching methods to reduce carbon emissions, including energy system modeling, energy efficiency, and renewable energy integration.
To be awarded to an organization or association that sparked, realised, or significantly contributed with a specific initiative towards greener shipping
- BIMCO has been nominated for launching the Ship Recycling Alliance, a joint initiative aimed at accelerating the safe and environmentally sound recycling of ships ahead of the Hong Kong Convention enforcement in June 2025. The alliance aims to engage stakeholders to ensure responsible and safe ship recycling for people and the environment.
- ECSA has been nominated for launching the Clean Maritime Fuels Platform, an industry-led initiative aimed at enhancing communication between the shipping sector and fuel producers, while identifying common challenges and solutions in light of the Fit for 55 package and the transition to a net-zero economy by 2050.
- HEMEXPO has been nominated for launching the Sustainability Spotlight campaign to promote cleaner seas and net-zero emissions in the maritime sector. Launched in Q2 2024, the campaign includes educational materials, artwork, PR outreach, social media, and team-based environmental clean-up initiatives.
- Maersk Training has been nominated for its new Methanol as a Marine Fuel training program, reflecting A.P. Moller – Maersk’s commitment to innovation and decarbonization. The program aims to enhance safety and preparedness in handling methanol as a marine fuel, while prioritizing sustainability and decarbonization.
- NatPower Marine has been nominated for partnering with ports and shipping lines to integrate shore power and electric propulsion into Green Corridors. The company is developing the largest independent network of ship charging facilities, using proven EV charging technologies for maritime applications.
- The Nautical Institute has been nominated for its publication, “Training Standard for Handling Alternative Fuels in the Maritime Sector”, which outlines the essential knowledge for seafarers to safely handle novel fuels, including emergency response and key health and safety considerations.
GREEN4SEA Technology Award
To be awarded to an organization that provided a significant technological achievement or breakthrough or significant contribution in any aspect of environmental maritime activity
- Nippon Paint Marine has been nominated for its HydroSmoothXT™, a unique “water-trapping” technology that integrates hydrogel into self-polishing antifouling paints to enhance coating performance and reduce fuel emissions. This innovation debuted in Nippon Paint Marine’s LF-Sea, world’s first biomimetic low-friction antifouling coating.
- OneLink has been nominated for its modules EngineLink, EmissionLink, and ARIVA 360, which offer adaptable features to enhance environmental performance. It integrates services into a single system, streamlining efficiency monitoring and ensuring regulatory compliance with evolving environmental regulations.
- PortXchange has been nominated for its EmissionInsider, a solution that tracks and analyzes a port’s carbon footprint, identifying pollutant sources and hotspots. It enables users to evaluate multiple “what-if” scenarios using the port’s specific data to determine the potential impact of decarbonization plans.
- StormGeo has been nominated for its Strategic Power Routing solution, a significant advancement in sustainable maritime operations. It offers shipping companies a unique approach to reducing fuel consumption and emissions without compromising safety or operational efficiency.
- Thordon Bearings Inc. has been nominated for the Thordon Blue Ocean Stern Space (T-BOSS), designed to meet the propeller shaft bearing needs of the sterntubeless ship concept developed by the Blue Ocean Alliance and the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA).
GREEN4SEA Clean Shipping Award
To be awarded to an organization that contributed towards cleaner shipping
- Anemoi Marine Technologies has been nominated for introducing Anemoi Rotor Sails, which improve vessel efficiency by reducing fuel consumption, bunker costs, and harmful emissions. Anemoi has designed patented systems that allow the Rotor Sails to be moved or folded on the deck.
- ERMA FIRST has been nominated for its CARBON FIT, an advanced carbon capture and storage (CCS) system that reduces a vessel’s environmental impact and helps owners, operators, and managers meet or exceed carbon intensity regulations.
- FueLNG has been nominated for providing safe, efficient, and sustainable LNG distribution solutions to industry stakeholders. Since its launch in 2021 as a pioneer in LNG bunkering in Singapore, FueLNG has successfully completed over 500 truck-to-ship and 350 ship-to-ship LNG bunkering operations.
- GIT Coatings has been nominated for developing advanced marine coatings using nanotechnology to enhance vessel performance and minimize environmental impact. Its flagship products, XGIT-PROP and XGIT-FUEL, are graphene-based coatings that reduce biofouling, improve fuel efficiency, and lower carbon emissions on propellers and hulls.
- Jotun AS has been nominated for advancing cleaner shipping by transitioning from a paint supplier to an expert partner in fleet efficiency. In 2022, Jotun partnered with 12 suppliers on Hurtigruten’s Sea Zero project, aiming for zero-emission passenger and freight transport along the Norwegian coast by 2030.
GREEN4SEA Energy Efficiency Award
To be awarded to an organization that provided a significant achievement, breakthrough or contribution in any aspect of energy efficiency in shipping
- Bound4blue has been nominated for its eSAILs®, a modernized suction sail that converts wind into direct propulsion for ships. This solution generates six to seven times more lift than a conventional sail and is designed to maximize fuel savings in a cost-efficient manner.
- CM Technologies GmbH has been nominated for its PREMET X Fuel Injection Acoustic Emissions Sensor, which enables engineers to monitor the acoustic signature of a diesel engine’s fuel injection system to detect issues with fuel injectors, nozzles, and pumps.
- GNV Grandi Navi Veloci S.p.A. has been nominated for its commitment to energy efficiency, playing a key role in the ferry sector’s energy transition. Part of the MSC Group, the company is modernizing its fleet with four new Ro-Pax vessels featuring high energy efficiency standards.
- Klaveness Combination Carriers (KCC) has been nominated for installing the world’s largest suction sails on their new CABU III, as part of KCC’s environmental goal to reduce the carbon intensity of its fleet by 35% by the end of this decade. KCC will be the first shipowner to install the largest unit of eSAILs, the model 3.
- METIS has been nominated for its innovative platform that processes vast amounts of data, providing actionable insights across four key domains: Emissions, Operations, Performance, and Machinery. Its 2024 scoring system simplifies complex data into clear dashboards, empowering fleet operators to optimize energy efficiency.
GREEN4SEA Tanker Operator Award
To be awarded to a ship operator of oil or chemical tankers or gas carriers that demonstrated environmental excellence and performance above average in any aspect of maritime activity
- Anglo-Eastern Ship Management has been nominated for its commitment to environmentally friendly marine fuel technology. In 2024, the company reached a milestone by safely bunkering 100,000 m³ of liquefied natural gas (LNG) across its fleet of LNG dual-fuel vessels through 35 successful LNG bunkering operations.
- Arcadia Shipmanagement has been nominated for its commitment to sustainable and responsible shipping practices. In 2024, Arcadia became the first Greek shipping company to alter its ships’ courses to protect endangered whales in the Hellenic Trench.
- Capital Ship Management has been nominated for investing in wind propulsion, LNG, and eco-friendly designs. For example, its M/T ‘Avax’, a 50,000 dwt eco-type tanker, was assigned Wind-Assisted Ready and HVSC-Ready notations by ABS, and is the third of six LNG Fuel Ready sister ships delivered in 2023.
- Columbia Group has been nominated for its leadership in sustainable shipping through the effective implementation of ESG principles at the heart of its maritime operations. The company is also actively working to reduce CO2 emissions and has introduced an Emissions Monitoring and Reporting Service to enhance its environmental performance.
- Pertamina International Shipping (PIS) has been nominated for its transition to environmentally friendly operations, aiming to reduce carbon emissions by 30% by 2030. PIS has outlined both short-term and long-term plans, focusing on alternative energy sources like biofuels and the development of carbon transport and storage capabilities.
- Teekay has been nominated for its commitment to an ESG strategy, focusing on three key goals: allocating capital to support the global energy transition, operating its existing fleets as safely and efficiently as possible, and adopting and promoting ESG best practices in the maritime industry.
GREEN4SEA Dry Bulk Operator Award
To be awarded to a ship operator of bulk carriers or general dry cargo vessels that demonstrated environmental excellence and performance above average in any aspect of maritime activity
- Eastern Pacific Shipping has been nominated for its commitment to the decarbonization journey, with investments in wind propulsion. In 2024, the company partnered with bound4blue to install three 22-metre eSAILs® onboard the Pacific Sentinel, with forecasted energy consumption savings of around 10%, depending on vessel routing.
- ESL Shipping has been nominated for its commitment to decarbonization through investments in a series of fossil-free handysize vessels designed to support the Nordic green transition. The company has recently placed orders for new vessels capable of operating entirely fossil-free, powered by green hydrogen-based e-methanol or biomethanol.
- IINO LINES has been nominated for its commitment to sustainability with Japan’s first large methanol dual-fuel VLCC. Designed by a consortium, the vessel will use methanol and conventional fuel oil and features a shaft generator that produces electricity from the main propeller shaft.
- Ionic Bulk Carriers (MGT) Inc. has been nominated for its commitment to sustainable practices, focusing on energy efficiency and pollution prevention. With zero incidents and zero spills policy, it aims to protect the environment and continuously improve its performance in compliance with national and international regulations.
- Neptune Dry Management has been nominated for its commitment to an ESG strategy, paving the way for a safe and sustainable future. The company actively works to reduce its environmental footprint and has invested in developing technologies, ship designs, operating efficiencies, and monitoring systems to support sustainability.
- Star Bulk has been nominated for its commitment to sustainability, integrating environmental responsibility into its operations. As a UN Global Compact signatory and member of the Getting to Zero Coalition, the company focuses on reducing its environmental impact and supporting the transition to a low-carbon shipping future.
GREEN4SEA Personality & Leadership Awards
There are no nominees shortlisted for this Award. After consideration and review of a list of “Editor’s Pick” nominees, the SAFETY4SEA Team will announce the winners during the awards presentation. These are special category awards for any individual person that provided industry leadership and contributed towards greener shipping throughout his/her career.
