The Maritime Safety Agency of Barcelona (Salvamento Maritimo) is conducting research in Barcelona for the two missing crew members, after the collision occurred on March 20, between the fishing vessel El Fairell and the vessel Midvolga.
As a result of the collision, the fishing boat El Fairell sank, 3 miles from the port of Barcelona in a depth of 160 meters. The Agency reports that two crew members, a 34 year-old of Moroccan and 37 year-old Senegalese, are still missing. Two out of four crew members were rescued.
The vessel Clara Campoamor from Cartagena and an underwater robot (ROV), from its usual base in Fene, were mobilized to join the device. The commands are sent via a remote control via the cable to the ROV. The data of the ROV cameras, sensor and sonar data are also transmitted to the surface control center of the vessel via the cable.
The submarine inspection of the fishing boat, in depth of 160 meters, is expected to begin in March 22. The Agency has already launched a surface search operation.
As a precautionary measure, the Maritime Captain of Barcelona has instructed the merchant Midvolga 2 to remain in the port until the investigations are completed.
The Clara Campoamor can be used as a platform to support maritime operations because of a dynamic positioning system, enabled spaces and equipment for the work of divers, auxiliary equipment, communications center, etc.
The Spanish Agency issued a video on the investigation in its social media account.
