The COVID-19 crisis was an opportunity for digitalization to rise within the shipping industry; Now, seafarer training is taking place online due to the worldwide lockdown and travel restrictions.
Specifically, crew manager Henrik Jensen comments that seafarer training will significantly change and predicts that it will remain digital after the pandemic as the industry is looking for innovative solutions for working and studying.
This move was already happening but has been accelerated by the pandemic. There should be no difference in the standard of a seafarer who qualifies online and one who does so in person, and the cost savings for employers and seafarers are important at this difficult time.
In addition, many are those who see the advantages of the digital revolution; Mr Jensen highlights that online methods will enable students to learn in their own time and environment, which will be benenifial for them as it is more flexibe.
He added that despite digitalization, there are still training courses that have to be digitalized.
I believe that only training for the development of practical, hands-on skills such as welding, or bridge and engine simulation where the physical equipment is necessary, will continue in the same way – and even these may become a blended format, providing training spread between the online platform and a simulator,
… Mr Jensen noted.
Recently, Safebridge announced the launch of SafeLearn for Business, a solution which allows companies and training providers in the maritime industry to host their internal and external training online via the SafeLearn LMS.
Also, UK MCA announced it was cancelling all face to face oral exams and moved this process online.
