On International Women’s Day, 8 March, Southampton-based ferry operator Red Funnel appointed Alice Duncan as its first female captain. Ms. Duncan started her cadetship at the age of 18, and joined Red Funnel five years ago.
Alice Duncan joined Red Funnel as a chief officer working on the company’s ro-pax and high-speed ferries, operating between Southampton and the Isle of Wight.

For the last two years, she worked onboard the 4,128gt Red Osprey where she’s gained additional qualifications, skills and experience, as well as in-house training and assessment programmes to take overall command.
Alice Duncan stated that she is very proud of this development and noted that the shipping industry needs more women. She also encouraged other women to join the sector.
Debbie Reed, interim HR director at Red Funnel, is also proud of Mr. Duncan’s promotion, and hopes that this will inspite more women to join the maritime industry.
