Malaysian Pelabuhan Tanjung Pelepas Sdn Bhd (PTP) has filed a lawsuit against Rising Star Shipping Sdn (RSS) and The Shipowners’ Mutual Protection and Indemnity Association (Luxembourg) Singapore Branch, in relation to the oil spill at PTP’s premises from 2016.
According to parent group MMC Corp, on 24 August 2016, during berthing at ATT Tanjung Bin Terminal and loading a cargo of 2,500 metric tonnes of marine fuel oil, Trident Star ship suffered an overflow from one of its tanks onto the upper deck, causing an oil spill in the water.
The oil spill spread out towards PTP’s premises lead to marine pollution which brought significant losses, the company denounced.
In light of this, PTP is seeking RM 31.8 million in damage claims (USD 7.4 million), plus interest at the rate of 5% per year on the sum from the lawsuit commencement to the date of full and final payment.
Earlier, on 17 February, Rising Star had obtained a declaration from the Kuala Lumpur High Court limiting its liability to a maximum of 4.51m Special Drawing Rights (MYR25m).
