SAFETY4SEA is pleased to announce that Project Forward won the 2018 GREEN4SEA Clean Shipping Award at a prestigious awards ceremony which successfully concluded on March the 6th at the Yacht Club of Greece in Athens, the evening ahead of the GREEN4SEA Conference.
Project Forward received the 2018 GREEN4SEA Clean Shipping Award, sponsored by Orpheus Marine Transport, for promoting the adoption of LNG as a marine fuel, suggesting the design of a Kamsarmax size bulk carrier which reduces the cost of transportation at sea, modernizes the shipping industry and defines the new standard of vessel for IMO’s 2020 emission rules. Other short-listed nominees for this category were: CMA CGM Group, Ecoslops, Green Ship of the Future and Vision of the Fjords.
Presenting the award Mr. Dimitrios Alexopoulos, Managing Director, Orpheus Marine Transport, on behalf of the sponsor, said “Over the last 2 decades the industry has adopted regulations aimed at making shipping operations more environmental friendly, in other words more ‘clean’. The staggered reduction of sulphur content in fuels over a few years culminating with the 2020 IMO sulphur cap is a good example. LNG is widely used on shore around the world and is considered one of the ‘cleanest’ fuels. Its use as a marine fuel, although on the increase, is still very limited. This joint development project researching the adoption of LNG as a marine fuel, through its innovative Kamsarmax Bulk Carrier design, is successfully promoting ‘cleaner’ shipping.”
Accepting the award on behalf of the Project Forward, Mr. Antonis Trakakis Technical Manager, Arista Shipping, stated “Two years after its onset, Project Forward became a Joint Industry Project and from that time on, many engineers across Europe and other countries, offered their knowledge, support and expertise for reaching the targets set back in 2013. During the past 5 years we have covered a very long distance for reaching our goals, and now we are only one step away from the target to see the PF ships in the water. This award belongs to all those who supported this effort from day 1, and to all those who selected to embark on a long journey in unchartered waters where although the target was clear, there was absolutely no guarantee that it could ever be reached.”
Project Forward is a Joint Development Project to combat global ship emissions by promoting the adoption of liquefied natural gas as a marine fuel. Conceived in 2013, and funded by Arista Shipping, Project Forward was presented in 2015. Forward identified the potential of liquefied natural gas as a marine fuel and engaged in an extensive R&D program which arrived at a technically reliable and commercially feasible design of a Kamsarmax size bulk carrier which apart from its extremely low environmental footprint, reduces the cost of transportation at sea, modernizes the shipping industry and defines the new standard of vessel for immediate employment post-IMO’s 2020 emission rules.
Project Forward attracted the most votes by the end of the voting period which held online during a 30-days period. GREEN4SEA Conference & Awards within the scope of awarding environmental excellence and performance above average in any aspect of maritime activity. Other winners of the 2018 GREEN4SEA Awards were: V.Ships for the Dry Operator Award, Prime Marine for the Tanker Operator Award, Alfa Laval for the Technology Award, MPA Singapore for the Port Award, Elemed Project for the Initiative Award and Dr. George Gratsos for the Leadership Award
