The world’s latest next-generation cold storage and logistics facility opened at the US Port of Oakland. Lineage Cool Port Oakland (Cool Port) is a temperature controlled transload and distribution facility aimed to maximize use of the Port’s road, rail, and shipping network to increase the import and export of perishable food products.
US-based Lineage Logistics, LLC (Lineage) and Dreisbach Enterprises (Dreisbach) announced the official opening of the facility, which is set on 25 acres at the Port of Oakland’s waterfront. Cool Port will operate as the newest hub for temperature-controlled cargo transitioning through Northern California and it is a collaboration funded and supported by the Port of Oakland and the State of California.
According to the companies, Cool Port sets a high standard in efficiency, food safety and speed in the temperature-controlled and transportation industry. The 280,000-square-foot depot with 90 truck dock doors can send up to 1,000,000 tons of perishable product through the Port of Oakland per year, aiming to to facilitate the transition process between ship and warehouse, by lowering transportation costs and energy expenditure.
The facility also reduces truck usage, resulting in reduced diesel emissions. As an example, approximately 36 railcars per day can go straight to shipping containers to be loaded reducing the burdensome need to load cargo onto trucks for transfer between ships and rail.
In addition, cargo-handling equipment for LC Port is 100% electric-powered, which is projected to prevent nearly 9,000 pounds of CO2 emissions in the first five years of its operation.
The Port of Oakland has announced a five year strategic plan that reassures that the local community will benefit from the operation. Currently, 73.000 workers are employed but the number is expected to grow. Since the Port of Oakland serves the Bay Area, this operation will contribute in job growth employing roughly 200 people from Oakland and other nearby locations. The area will see eight new jobs every time 1.000 containers are moved through facility.
