The Port of Antwerp-Bruges has taken delivery of six energy-efficient tugs, including the Volta 1, Europe’s first fully electric Reversed Stern Drive (RSD) tugboat.
As informed, the Volta 1, boasting a bollard pull of 70 tons, operates emission-free, thanks to its high-capacity batteries that recharge within two hours using a 1.5 MW charging station. Alongside the Volta 1, five diesel-powered RSD tugs also join the fleet, equipped with exhaust gas after-treatment systems and designed for reduced fuel consumption and emissions.
Constructed at Damen Song Cam Shipyard in Vietnam, these tugboats underwent tests before being transported over 10,000 kilometers aboard the heavy-lift ship Jumbo Kinetic.
With this new generation of energy-efficient tugboats, we take a significant step forward in our transition to a climate-neutral fleet. This investment demonstrates our commitment to sustainable innovation. The Volta 1 is a groundbreaking addition to our fleet and a beacon for the entire maritime sector.
… said Rob Smeets, Chief Operations Officer of the Port of Antwerp-Bruges
The next phase involves preparing the vessels for full operational deployment, including crew training, technical set-ups, and the integration of charging infrastructure for the Volta 1 at the Nautical Operational Cluster.
The arrival of these new tugboats marks a new chapter in the sustainability of our port and strengthens our position as the economic engine of Flanders. Just like with the Hydrotug and the Methatug, the Volta 1 once again confirms our pioneering role in the energy transition and environmentally friendly shipping.

This addition is part of the port’s broader greening program aimed at achieving climate neutrality by 2050. The initiative focuses on modernizing the fleet, which contributes significantly to the port’s CO₂ emissions.
It builds on earlier innovations like the Hydrotug, the first hydrogen-powered tugboat, and the Methatug, the first methanol-powered tugboat, showcasing the port’s commitment to sustainable maritime solutions.
The pioneering steps they’ve taken towards greater sustainability are commendable and will undoubtedly serve as an inspiration for other ports. I look forward to continuing to build on our relationship as both Damen and the Port of Antwerp-Bruges strive for solutions for a sustainable maritime future.
