As Panama confirmed of its first coronavirus case, Wayne Stubbs, one sea port representative, ensured that the Panama City Port is safe given that the biggest concern for the time being is cruise ships.
Specifically, Stubbs stated that the Panama City Port Authority trades international cargo like copper, steel, and paper to and from places like Mexico, Europe and China.
He added that although the biggest concern for the shipping industry is cruise ships, it’s a situation Panama does not have to deal with.
According to local media WJHG, Stubbs commented that the cargo handled in Panama are not directly coming from the countries that have a large amount of outbreak of the virus, such as China and Italy.
We have some exports to China and some exports to Italy but those ships are not coming here to load from those countries. They’re loading from other countries and then going off to those markets
… added Stubbs.
He concluded that he does not think the port poses a risk to the community and considers it a low-risk operation.
