One person was killed and another one was injured on the aftermath of an explosion onboard the general cargo ship ‘Mumtaz Amca’ at Sinop anchorage, Turkey, Black sea, on Wednesday.
While en route from Tuapse, Russia, to Izmit, Turkey, the ship, loaded with coal, sheltered in Sinop Cape area due to heavy weather, when a gas entrapment in the boiler room caused an explosion, according to data provided by the Turkish Anadolu Agency.
Strong winds and storm hindered the air ambulance to recover the body of the deceased crewman, identified as Kazim Sucu. The injured crew member Ragip Yanak, was rescued by a maritime police boat and transferred to a state hospital.
Following the accident, the Liberia-flagged ‘Mumtaz Amca’ was brought four miles off Sinop.
The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), fire-fighters and police teams are present on the shore for rescue work. The extent of the ship’s damage is yet to be revealed.
