NYK signed a memorandum of understanding with Kyushu Electric Power, Saibu Gas, and and Chugoku Electric Power regarding a joint study for commercialization of LNG fuel supply for ships in the Setouchi and Kyushu districts.
The four companies will jointly study the commercialization of LNG fuel supply for ships in this area, because of the expected increase in the number of vessels using LNG that can reduce air pollutants and GHG emissions in comparison to heavy oil, according to stricter emissions regulations that will enter into force in 2020.

Namely, in comparison to heavy fuel oil, LNG can reduce sulfur oxide (SOx) and particulate matter (PM) by about 100%, nitrogen oxides (NOx) by up to 80%, and carbon dioxide (CO2) by about 30%.
