Ningbo Zhoushan Port has announced plans to expand its operations with a new terminal boasting an annual handling capacity of 2 million TEUs.
As informed, construction of the first phase is scheduled to begin in October 2025, with completion expected by December 2027 and full production by 2030. The project, with an estimated investment of RMB 6.5 billion (around $922 million), will feature two 200,000-ton container ship berths, capable of accommodating vessels up to 24,000 TEU.
Future-proofing the terminal, its hydraulic structures will be designed for 32,000 TEU ships, reflecting the growing trend toward ultra-large containerships. To remind, at the SMM Hamburg exhibition, China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) unveiled a groundbreaking advancement in maritime engineering: the world’s largest container ship, the GREEN SEALION 27500. With an unprecedented capacity of 27,500 Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEU), this massive vessel sets a new milestone in the industry.
Ningbo-Zhoushan Port is currently the third-largest container port in the world, handling 35.3 million TEUs in 2023. The investment payback period is estimated to be around 19.2 years.
