At the Maritime Research Institute Netherlands
A depressurised wave basin (DWB) at the Maritime Research Institute Netherlands (MARIN) has been officially inaugurated by Dutch Minister of Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation, Maxime Verhagen.
The DWB, which combines the functions of a depressurised towing tank with a wave maker, is claimed to be the first of its type anywhere, and is the result of a government-backed collaborative process known as ‘Topsector Water’, bringing together experts from industry and research institutes to promote the country’s water‐related knowledge and experience.
The DWB combines waves with a novel vacuum technique, and will be used by MARIN and its customers for various top-level research activities. It contains some 35 million litres of water and, says MARIN, is expected to strengthen the institute’s position in the maritime world and contribute to the competitiveness of the Dutch maritime cluster.
