Lloyd’s Register (LR) and the Korea Research Institute of Ships & Ocean Engineering (KRISO) have partnered in a joint development project to validate marine autonomous systems and operations.
This collaboration aims to create a comprehensive testing environment for verifying the hardware, software, and AI of Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS). The goal is to ensure safety, reliability, and performance, ultimately supporting the large-scale commercialization of autonomous ships in the maritime industry.
KRISO has already been developing testbeds through its KASS project, and the joint project with LR will enhance the verification and validation (V&V) processes for autonomous technologies. This collaboration is expected to establish practical and systematic V&V standards that could be adopted globally.
Leaders from both organizations, Andy McKeran (LR) and Keyyong Hong (KRISO), emphasized the importance of the project in advancing the commercialization, standardization, and digitalization of autonomous ships.
The partnership may eventually expand to include other UK and Korean stakeholders involved in maritime autonomy.
