MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company announced that it will pay the full costs of the clean-up of the 2 January MSC Zoe container spill. The company will continue searching the sea for the containers which fell overboard, ‘until the last one is found’.
The mega container ship MSC Zoe lost over 200 containers during the night from January 1 to January 2 in North sea during rough weather, north of Borkum, Germany. The ship was heading from Sines Portugal to Bremerhaven Germany.
As of now, reports mention that about 35 were washed in Netherlands islands. Their content was scattered around, consisting of car parts and toys.

However, there are reports that 3 containers include organic peroxides. This substance can decompose very quickly or explosively if it is exposed to only slight heat, friction, mechanical shock or contamination with incompatible materials.
In response, the Dutch Government decided to deploy troops in order to help in the clean up operation for the over 200 containers that fell from the MSC Zoe containership.
MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company has also started a clean-up operation in response to the spill of containers in the North Sea.
MSC appointed on 2 January a salvage company to retrieve the cargo and coordinate and beach clean-up operations. It is also deploying specialised ships equipped with sonar to search for missing cargo at sea.
In the latest update, MSC informed that it will pay the full costs of the clean-up operations. It also ensured that the beaches of the Dutch and German coastlines are surveyed until all debris related to this incident has been cleared.
