Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has announced a partnership with Tokyo LNG Tanker Co. to equip a new LNG carrier with two Wind Challenger wind propulsion systems.
As informed by MOL, these wind-assisted propulsion systems, developed by MOL and Oshima Shipbuilding, feature telescopic sails that help reduce fuel use and greenhouse gas emissions. The ship will operate under a long-term charter with Tokyo LNG Tanker.
This marks the second time the Wind Challenger will be installed on an LNG carrier, following earlier deployments on bulk carriers. MOL emphasized this move as part of its commitment to sustainable shipping and advancing decarbonization in maritime transport.
As the world’s largest owner of LNG carriers, MOL remains committed to promoting a decarbonized society. Through proactive efforts to reduce the environmental footprint of LNG ocean transport, we are addressing the increasing global demand with innovative and sustainable approaches.
