The Florida Ports Council has singed a Letter of Intent with the Coordination of Ports and Merchant Marine of Mexico to maintain relations that promote international commerce and economic development.
Florida, which according to a report is on top of the cruise economic impact, is a leading global trade hub, whereas Mexico is its second largest trading partner.

Doug Wheeler, president and CEO of the Florida Ports Council stated that the Letter of Intent represents the relations between the two partners that were built during the trade mission to Mexico this summer. Additionally, he noted that there are more opportunities for bilateral waterborne trade development.
Both partners anticipate time and cost savings by maximizing the efficient operation of all-water trade between the Florida ports and Mexican gulf ports.
Also, they aspire that by the collaboration they will promote port development, improve communications and logistics, take advantage of new technologies and strengthen institutional relations that will enhance international commerce and economic development in both, Mexico and Florida.
As Juan Kuryla, Chairman of the Florida Ports Council, highlighted that
The all-water route from Mexico to Florida ports is the fastest way to move cargo, while saving on transportation and logistics costs.
Thus, the LOI includes the launch of a working group, consisting of maritime commerce leaders from Mexico and Florida to review and understand the issues, opportunities and challenges that improve the flow of international commerce between Mexico and Florida.
Their duties will include data analysis; identification of technological and regulatory enhancements; and development of infrastructure facilitating sea transport.
Juan Kuryla, Chairman of the FPC Board of Directors and PortMiami Director, and Ing. Hector López Gutiérrez, General Coordinator of the Coordination of Ports, cosigned the LOI in Miami Florida the 20th day of November, 2019.
