Søren Skou, Maersk CEO, provides an overview of the shipping industry performance now that the global shipping prices are staging a major comeback. In an exclusive interview to CNBC at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Mr Skou, told that there are opportunities for growth in oil business, especially in the North Sea sector.
Mr Skou told CNBC that the global freight index for container shipping had more than doubled in the last nine months months, noting that this is driven by the fact that the carriers have taken a lot of capacity out of the market.
Regarding company’s plans, Mr Skou said:
”We still see opportunities for growth in our oil business, the one of the four energy related businesses, there’s still, you know, lots of value to be had in the oil sector. We plan to focus our oil company more on the North Sea, with less diversity or graphic footprint than we have today. We see opportunities in the North Sea sector.”
Mr Skou also said that he wasn’t focused on any potential dampening of global trade under a Trump presidency – who has touted protectionist policies on the campaign trail – but highlighted that plans for lower taxes in the U.S. could aid his industry.
